Sailing Lake Marion, South Carolina

I have a question? Do people who live on and around lake Marion Sail? I am from upstate New York and we sail on Lake Ontario. We are retiring soon and I am looking at finding a lake that is not land locked. Lake Marion comes up. I am concerned because everything I read says that there are stumps under the water since they did not clear it before filling. If you do sail lake Marion, what size boat and draft do you have? Thank you!

Not speaking from experience: just a little reading and a quick look at some charts.

People do sail the lake, but I don't know how many big keel boats are on the lake. Here in Nashville, one of our lakes is sort of like that with a lot hazards, but they sail some rather large keel boats up at one end. Looks like Lake Marion is similar. Looks like getting out to the big water has to planned well and is under power.

Here, you see boats up to about 30'; mostly shoal keels and swings.

Hopefully someone from SC pipes in.
