safety or not safety wise?

ok , i dont want to get into a big debate here. however here is my question to you all. i know that its not required and all, but for safety concerns in my opinion its way much safer than a handheld airhorn, and 2xs louder. there are numerous reasons why they should be on every boat . i for one am for overdoing safety. but thats just me. so here it is. and please be honest. this is where i want to install mine, and it will be out of harms way and other obstacles (halyards, Sheets ect)

While I’ve had to replace my horn once due to corrosion, I’ve never once actually needed to use it in the 27 years I’ve owned the boat.

Having said that, I’ve not heard a horn used in years.

I had a set of horns that I installed on the boat back in 2011. those died and I installed a set of 135db trumpet horns.

I use them to signal the intentions to other boaters.

The only issue I see with air horns is that there are two systems which must be maintained vs one.

at the time of the writing of this, i was undecided as to location, i looked at every possable spot i could, i settled on this choosen spot. so at 12am i got the drill out and did the nasty. lol. it is now installed. i will be using 5200 to seal it and the wires. will also use wire loom i have to clean up the wires.

Any horn is a good horn. Power boats are required to have them, I don't know why a lot of sailboats don't. If it turns foggy it would be a hazard to other boaters to not have one.

is it not law that you have to signal your intentions ? in marinas, leaving or coming into a marina, or even in open waters, to me its like not having signal lights on a car. alot of drivers are confused when someone has a starboard side signal goin but makes the turn to port or vice versa. very big hazard. or they dont signal at all and just turn . some stay in middle road then turn last minute . BANG! collision. the rules for signalling are put in place for reasons..... and if noone uses them , then why bother with safety at all. ? and i mean any kind of safety not just horns on a boat or signal lights on a car.

In theory but not practice......the conditions requiring signally are limited in scope to those outside normal operating practice/etiquette and thus are used very infrequently.

Locally, if a Captain needs your attention they hail you on VHF.

Glad I don't have to worry about such things.....the marina's I frequent cater to the larger boat classes and the commerical guys.

You cut infront of somebody like you described above, you will get a visit and a not so friendly reminder from one of the local Captains when you return to the dock. It will be the last time you cut someone off

and what makes you say that ? i put them where id did as its out of the way from everything i could think of and will be safe. as for me sailing my boat. i will be . so i dont understand where you come off saying that.
