Re: Sad, Sad day....

Sad sad day? I guess some people don't know how to appreciate what they have.

I am a 4 year college grad, private pilot and aircraft mechanic and I can't find a job in an area that is known for the biggest helicopter bases in the world.

Yea, sad sad day. YOU'RE STARTING A NEW JOB. I wonder how that feels.

I am just up the road from you in Pineville. The job market here is pretty bad also. The IP paper mill shut down, Union Tank car laid off 2/3 of it's work force and the construction industry is in the toilet. I tried to find a job in Lafayette a few years ago since my wife is from there. I am an EE and hold professional engineering licenses in 8 states and could not find anything. I am in the utility construction industry, so we are not doing to bad. We actually have a hard time finding site managers to work all over the US at our sites.

Open your eyes to what's out there, don't be afraid to work hard and outside of your discipline!

You mean like test engineer, chemical sales, DOD construction quality manger, field service technician, automotive service rep, fast-food manager, manufacturing engineer, pharmaceutical sales, industrial equipment sales, project engineer, satellite installation, photovoltaic array installation, production supervisor, air traffic controller, or middle school math teacher?

Maybe it's my resume. Take a look at mine, will you?;)

Wish I had known that in March...

Oh well, it'll be worth the temporary pay cut to work locally.

Seems like most of the time its not WHAT you know but WHO you know hence the importance of always networking. I had a friend get laid off recently who is a very talented electrical engineer. After a few months of no luck he happened to put his resume at a company I used to work for. I was able to give some glowing recommendations and he was able to get the job.

As a Marine the humor there is funny, but somewhat sad at the same time. I had always thought you ring knockers stuck together and would be there to aid one another through thick and thin.

A former Staff Sergeant of mine got me into my career and it has been nothing but forward moving since I started it. I?ve seen increases in my annual salary per year since I started and have yet to miss a raise or take a pay cut. Damned awesome benefits, 14 days on and 14 days of work rotation and 2 weeks vacation a year.

Hope something lands soon for you guys looking for work, I am not trying to brag but there are fields out there that are thriving and growing no matter the economic status of the country.

Six years ago I lost my job in marketing, a month before I was to marry my wife and thought my life was over. I packed my office and sat in my car and whispered a little prayer or a rebuke just to let the big guy know he better have a plan and he did.

Ran it through Microsoft Word...says you have sentence fragments. That's probably your problem.

Well, hell. I'll ditch the Kiplinger bullet style for complete sentences and be making six figures in no time.

And they say the 2 best days in your life are...
But surely not in this case. Good luck to you.

All joking aside, you've got some good experience there. Look me up if you come out to CA. We're finally starting to turn the corner...slowly, albeit, but making the turn nevertheless.

I work in the offshore oilfield production. After the well is drilled we come in and produce the well before sending the oil/gas to the beach for refinement.

Look on rigzone.com at production jobs. It will seem as if it does not pay enough but I promise you the money is there. I earned 60k my first year offshore and it has went up every year since. Plus you only work 14 days a month.

Average day..wake up, eat, get some numbers, watch some tv, do a small project, eat lunch, watch a movie, nap, eat dinner, go fishing, go to sleep

The regulatory class costs about 350 bucks, if you need some help or have questions send me a PM, as a Marine I owe it to another Marine to help him if possible...it is the brotherhood you know...even for a ring knocker..LOL

Really sorry to hear about the boat. I'd have a tough time letting mine go if I had to. All I can say is that here in Minnesota our unemployment is only at 5.1% and we seem to have been shielded from much of the malaise. If you can handle the occasional minus 50 degrees farenheit in the winter and colder the farther north you go, take a look here. We have 11,000+ lakes for your new boat when you get back on your feet.

A good field to go into is Civil engineering. Seems like everytime there is a down turn in the economy money gets pumped into infrastructure. I have a diploma from a 2 year university course and in 12 years of full time work I have never had any sort of set back or slow down. I'm busier now then ever, although I know the economy up hear in Canada wasn't hit nearly as hard as some other places
