One only needs to know that a GOVERNMENT CUT is just not getting what they wanted.

As an example.

Current budget: $1M

Proposed budget: $2M

If they do not get the $2M, the government sees it as a $1M cut.

Another exmaple.

You think you are worth a 100% raise. Instead, you get 20%. You can't blame your boss for the other 80%.

Well, I guess you could, if you're liberal.

;)

Just curious, how much do you guys pay on average for healthcare? Our national health service over here works out at about 4% of annual income but it's mandatory.

That depends on alot of factors.....Whether you are self employed or not....Different companies have different levels of coverage....Some do not offer any at all.....This country's health care system, (or lack thereof) is sad...... :( ....JK

Nos4r2,

It represents about 15% of our national GNP. That is a good starting place. Most people will pay about 20% of the yearly cost in premiums plus a deductable while most employers cover around 80% +/- of the premiums. If you don't work the government has countless federal and state programs and failing that, there are free clinics in low income area's and in addition doctors can't turn you away based on your ability to pay, and as far as I know, health care debts don't count against your credit rating. This is a real problem with illegal immigrants and a hidden cost to their presence here. The almost never pay but must be given medical attention if they want or need it. But if you can't get healthcare its unusual.

NOs, It's anywhere from $6000-$10,000 dollars a year for a private health plan. If you work for somebody it costs anywhere from nothing to 3-400 dollars a month, depends on your company. Convert dollars into your pound thingy and you'll get an idea

"" ...to cut planned spending for ...""

That means the Dems wanted to push thru the automatic increase of 7.6% (or there about), but they are only getting an increase of approx. 5.2%

Government beurocracy eats up most of that, leaving a small increase, but still an increase, over the previous years funding.

We pay a mandetory 3% for medicare, or if we chose a private fund, it's about $4000 per year.

Medicare works great for serious illness, you are attended to quickly and by the best. But if your problem is minor (the definition of minor is debatable) then you go on a waiting list, sometimes up to 5 years.

I think that our medicare model is being seriously looked at by some of your states - pity that it is not being looked at by your feds.

NOS,

I have been told that a lot of Brits carry their own health insurance as well. I understand that what Dunaruna notes about a waiting period etc. is a big issue in the UK and that's why they buy it. Is this accurate?

We don't wait to do anything under the plans that I know. You have to get a couple of doctors to sign off on some plans, but you get the deal done as soon as there is a room at the Hospital; a two month wait max . . .

Unfortunately the waiting period is a big issue in the uk for minor surgery-but most private medical insurance over here is quite expensive and there's no opt-out from the 4% charge if you have it. Private medical insurance is horrendously costly or unobtainable for the elderly so they usually have no choice but to wait.

A friend (30's) has been waiting for a double hip replacement for several years now-but the NHS won't do it as apparently the new hip joints they fit are only designed to last 10 years...there is a more durable alternative but its been deemed too expensive so they refuse to do anything. Meanwhile he's drawing benefits as he's unable to work. I guess the point is that we're ALL getting screwed by our governments over this.

Medicare and Medicaid....

That's where you get goods and services for free, right?

That's where the money that comes out of my paycheck labeled "Medicare" goes to, right?

That's money that I will never see when I retire, right?

That's money I can't spend on taking care of my own family, right?

Hey I am with you 42, I remember back when I was 23 starting out and I felt the same way. Why do we have to take care of those who left us with this screwed up country. Big deal they gave their lives defending and building it. They are nothing but a bunch of leaches and should support themselves, we owe them nothing!!!

Tax cuts can indeed lead to revenue increases, but they don't necessarily lead to them.

The economy when Reagan took over was completely different than when Bush took over, and any comparison between the two is ludicrous. And Reagan raised taxes before he left office.

It certainly is not a simple linear relationship, or a tax rate of zero would lead to maximum government tax revenue.

You won't see it until you are 65 or disabled & can't work.....The problem here is that those who are 65 have all ready paid into it.....The gubmint took the "loan" & now they wanna renig....How would you like it if you paid for a top of the line T.V. & then went to pick it up & were told "we don't have that model any more"......but we will give you the floor model......It bothers me that we have pised away way more than that in Iraq & continue to do so.....We will help everyone but our own citizens.....JK

If they gave their lives defending and building it, why are they collecting medicaid?

But seriously, your logic is vastly flawed.

Say, txs;

I am on Medicare. I paid in to it from the first day it existed until I retired. That amounted to many thousands of bux. I now pay around $87 a month to stay enrolled. Last year (05) the Fed paid about $400 for my medical needs. My medigap insurance (another $150 a month) paid about $200. I somehow don't see that as you taking care of me.

You need to get a little deeper into grass roots history if you think (or thought) that "we" have provided "you" a screwed up country. Compared to what??

This is the greatest country with the highest standard of living and quality of life in the history of civilization. My generation and our ancestors made it that way with exactly the sort of activity that you are always demonizing.

Sometimes I read your rants and wonder if you wouldn't really prefer Marxist socialism. But then you really would be taking care of me.

When one pays for insurance and then submits a claim, is that welfare??? Is Medicare welfare?

DJ put forth a list of forign companies that do business in the U.S.A.. I would like to point out that these are not government contractors or are they ripping off utility bills and services or were they caught evading taxes on income gained in the U.S.A..

As was put forth above, cutting taxes grew the economy. Will reducing taxes to Zero, or perhaps the government should give every citizen grants for just being! If your a business person, following the same logic, increasing your expenses should increase your proffit. Perhaps it's the New Math and I just don't get it.

Re: Sad Day for Those Who Make 65 or Over

There is so much twisted logic in this thread that I can't figure it out. Can we have a do-over? Let's use plain english. Cause and effect, direct lines, no sarcasm. Kind of an Orwellian/caveman approach. Medical care good. Need get. How get? You pay? Gov't pay? How much? Gov't mean? Gov't nice? Kill people? Save people? Like old people? Prefer younger? . . .

As usual the only one making any sense is JB . . . hmmmmmm.
