Hi,

I have a 1970 Seaswirl Newport tri hull (Glass of course) and trying to get it up and running.

I read many posts here that some folks used Rustoleum paint as bottom paint and I want your direct feedback on this.
I live in Montana so this boat only sees water for less than 6 months once a week and it is stored dry.

I'm planning on getting a keel guard so I’m not afraid of scratching the bottom when beaching.

Please don't say use this brand or that brand, only comment if you have any experience with Rustoleum as bottom pain, good or bad.

Also what type primer, roller or brush should I use?

Thank you,

Chris

Re: Rustoleum Feedback

No need or benefit to bottom painting a boat that doesn't get left in the water for extended periods, Chris.

The purpose of bottom paint is to prevent growth of marine organisms on the hull. They do it by leaching chemicals (like copper sulphate) into the water to poison things like barnacles or water plants.

I doubt that Rustoleum would be effective, anyway.

JB's correct ( as he is 99.999% of the time) but I was curious if you meant bottom paint to be hull paint? As in painting the exterior of your hull.

I meant the bottom of the hull(exterior). so i guess the bottom painting is a different thing than what i thought. :D .

Chris

My fiberglass fishing boat is painted with 3 colors of Rustoleum over Rustoleum white primer. I Rolled it on and brushed it smooth. It has held up well over the past 4 or 5 years. I use it almost weekly from ice out to ice in and keep it in the garage when not on the river. It is easy to touch up if I scratch it up but the paint is really pretty durable over the curved surfaces of my boat.

Re: Rustoleum Feedback

I did my tri-hull in it. Prep is key and I would add some hardner to it. It had a nasty tendancy to ,ildew until I wet back and wet sanded/buffed it. If done well, it'll shine great. Tip: in my area, Ace Hardware carries what appears to be a rebranded Rust-oleum, labeled as Ace Rust Stop. They will custom mix colors in it.

I sprayed it and am reasonably happy with the results, except for some things I goofed in spraying (too thin).

Re: Rustoleum Feedback

not to hi jack but what hardner would you add to the rust-oleum Jasonb. i painted the transom of my boat with it and it does mildew quickly but i think it is a little soft for boat paint. the hardner would help with that and the price is right.

Re: Rustoleum Feedback

I tried to find it at the mfgr's site, but this is the best I could find.

Enamel Hardner

I can find it localy at Tractor Supply stores. In your area, I think most wal-marts handle rustoleum marine paint too?

Re: Rustoleum Feedback

It looks like I solved the mildew problem when I wet sanded/buffed it.

Re: Rustoleum Feedback

Thanks JasonB the wet sanding and buffing sounds like the ticket to the best finish.
