Rustoleum as Bottom paint on Trailered boat?

Hi All,

I've seen a couple people talk about Rustoleum (regular type) on Boat bottoms. Was wondering how it was used, over what? and tesults.

My Needs: Trailer exclusively. PO already painted and it looks ugly. Dont want to go thru the cost and work of full strip or repaint with expensive bottom paint. I want to do it white to match the boat. I've researched Pettit Vivid White, and people use it for this purpose with very positive results. but big $$. My boat is a 20' walk around.

Again, Boat is trailered, I dont mind the occasional touch up. Dont need anti-fouling protection. It is currently painted which I will sand and even out as best i can. I guess its more of a cosmetic thing than anything.

Anyone have input on Rustoleum Professional0 By the gallon to roll or other methods?

Much thanks

Mark

Read WOG's thread that link takes you too......

Is there bottom paint on the boat now? Or is it the 'original' gelcoat?

Not bottom paint though, correct?

Is the previous paint well stuck?

Rusto Pro has been used roll & tip and roll & roll, several youtube vids, just do a search for the differences, or it can be sprayed.

Yep, no need for anti-foul properties. Old paint is on there fairly well. I will give it a sand, and smooth it out. Thank you. Will look at the youtube vids now. Seems like this might be a viable alternative for my needs.

Ayuh,.... So long as the paint on there now, Ain't ablative bottom paint,....

Sand it out Smooth, with say, 180 gr., 'n go to paintin' with Rustoleum...

So long as the existin' paint is Solid, 'n not flakin' off, the Rustoleum will stick just fine by itself, no need for a primer coat...

Touch-ups can be done on followin' years with just spot sandin', 'n spot paintin'....
It'll blend in very nicely, 'n shouldn't be at all Noticeable...

Rustoleum White, is a very, Very Bright White,...
It can be toned down by addin' abit of grey, blue, or yellow, or a mix to tint to match yer tastes...

Uhmm, I'm gunna disagree with NOT using primer. Unless you KNOW what the other paint is and it's properties, there's a chances that it could have issues with the rustoleum paint. Primers are formulated to NOT have issues with other paints and block any issues that might occur. Rustoleum primer prior to rustoleum finish paint ensures that there will be not compatibility issues. You MIGHT get by without Primer but IMHO you should not chance it. I recommend always using primer of the same MFG prior to painting ANYTHING. I know people do it everyday and some get by without any issues, but I've seen others that don't. Your boat...Your choice.

sand - pressure wash to remove sanding dust and misc. optionally prime with mcu Aluthane (mcu coatings have super bonding properties) - then hardware store enamel paint is fine!

you can google aluthane if you want

rothfm .. what do you want in the end result ??

You can expect something .. but it does mean that the outcome is going to be the same... an outcome of an end result is that which is simply put with experience/tools/product.

Nothing more or less.

If you dont have all 3 of these things .. then your on a short way to less than expected.

Get a guide.. a helper ( It seems that all the good stuff is PM'd around here now ) .. no actual Iboat forum needs to be involved.

Good luck..

YD.
