I have a 23 Wellcraft with a 260 Mercruiser Pre Alpha drive the drive is in pretty bad shape so I want to clean it up this winter. My problem is that its starting to get cold up here in Wisconsin and I need to winterize my boat but the drive is already off the boat and I dont want to put it on to winterize just to take it off once i'm done. My question is can I connect a hose to the water inlet on the gimble housing or with that not be enough water pressure going to the motor to cool it? Or is there anyway I can run my motor with the drive off the boat?

That will work just fine, just make sure that it stays in the water inlet hole as long as the engine is running....;)

actually you want to find the raw water hose that goes from the inner transom plate to the thermostat housing. pull that line and stick your hose in that, and clamp it in place.
you want your spigot 1/2 to 3/4 open.... depending on your pressure.
just don't rev the motor to high.... i'd say no higher than 1500 rpm.... but if your looking to winterize it.... then that's all you need.
don't forget to drain all the water back out!!!

Half way 3/4 open should be good.....
Like I said, just shove the hose in there make sure it stays in....
You can run any rpm you want....
The raw water impeller in the drive is no longer part of the equation to potentially collapse the hose feeding it.....
Although running any higher than 1500 is unnecessary.......;)

Ayuh,....

Or,....
You could Drain the Block, Manifolds, P/S Cooler,+ pull the Big Hose off the circulating Pump,...
And be Done with it....

I kinda gotta side with Capt. Jason on this 1,....
By pulling the In-coming hose off the T-Stat housing,+ hooking you garden hose to it,..
It's slightly less likely that you loose the water feed...
I've seen'em slip outa the gimbel housing hole,+ the Mechanic not know it....

While you won't have to worry about Smoking the Impeller,...
The Exhaust flappers,+ other Rubber parts will still be Smoked....

If the water feed is lost, the hot exhaust gasses will burn the rubber flapper in the downtube, and maybe the bellows. But if your running the water through it, it should cool them enough to not get burned.

You can pull the long hose off the transom that leads to the t-stat and connect the hose to that hose.

Run the motor under 1200 rpm no more.

Till the t-stat opens than you'll know it's warm.

Then do your fogging or whatever. I don't fog, but it's a personal choice.

Shut it down and do the oil change when it's off the motor.

Drain it. Stick a little piece of coat hanger wire in the drain holes make sure no rust clogged up the holes.

I leave my plugs out, some put them back in it's up to you.

Some add anti- freeze, i do but i leave the plugs out just in case somewhere inside the water pooled and i don't want that pooled water freezing.

I also pull all the hoses off the t-stat and engine mounted water pump and pour some af down those hoses.

I make sure i see some run out the out drive.

Your out drive is off.

He is talking about the plastic and rubber components inthe exhaust - if you loose cooling water they will burn.
