For the first time running 9.9 1998 mercury outboard out of water. Can I use the muffs I use for stern drives? Manual shows just a hose with one muff. Can I just clamp on standard muffs. Also, what are the watch outs, obviously does not discharge lots of water.

Re: Running Merc 9.9hsp off of 'Muff'

I used the muffs I had for my Cobra stern drive on my new 40hp Mariner. The only thing I noticed was that the Outboard engine required more pressure and flow and it took twice as long to produce water out the hole. In water about 10-15 seconds out of water about 30 seconds.

My muff only has one hose connect, but two ears.

Those extra 15 seconds seem like a life time the first time I did it.

Just my observations

Yes you can use a double ear muffs. Always use full water pressure when using the muffs. Whatever is extra will just escape from around the muffs.
