running engine without drive on it

Have an 82 Celebrity 188 br. Has the 485 in it. I took the drive off pre-covid because the main seal went bad and started dumping gear lube into the bilge. During covid I was wrapped up with my work, apprenticeship and school.
So now I've located a new drive... but before I purchase it, I want to make sure everything is still good with the motor.
I do understand that the drive has the water pump in it, but would I be able to start and run the engine for 10-15 seconds without the drive hooked up?

With the drive off, insert and secure a hose either without a end fitting or a hose adaptor that fits in the water hole port of the bell housing intake port, turn water on and run the engine as long as you like.

Just to clarify tho. The small hole off to the right is the water inlet right ?
No that hole is the shift cable. Looks like your gimbal ring and bellhosuing is off? There is a 5/8 hose that connects to bellhousing clamps on a right angle fitting at top above gimbal bearing can put a hose on there or go inside engine compartment and find hose coming up from drive to the heat exchanger. Can stab the garden hose in there.

read up on the 485, they have an iron head and aluminum block tend to blow head gaskets with minor overheats… so make sure you put a new impeller in outdrive.
there are some guys on here who run the 3.7 who can walk you through the nuances of maintaining them

Ahh the rusted pipe right above the gimbal race here?

Also while I'm asking... again just trying to get reacquainted.... what is the hole at the top there that takes Two bolts?
