Re: Running Blower when Sking

What I find curious, is that in this entire thread, nobody has mentioned the exhaust fumes that build up around the stern of the boat when the motor is idling. We've heard numerous reports of people who "Teak Surf" just off the stern of the boat, being overcome by CO2 fumes, and dropping dead. In California, we're required to install a (DMV provided) sticker on the stern of the craft warning of the dangers of CO2 fumes. Obviously this is more than just a prop safety issue. Please shut the motor down if people are anywhere in the water around the back of the boat. Just my PSA for the day. . .

Most people don't "teak surf" behind I/O's since the outdrive/prop are right there and the exhaust exits through the prop anyway. I'm not aware of any deaths that have occured from it, but it has made some people nautious and maybe pass out. You are still in open air, so it's not exactly like sitting in a closed garage with the engine running.

Required sticker in CA would maybe be more effective if placed on the hub of the steering wheel? :) It's the captain's job to manage what goes on inside and behind the boat.

Required sticker in CA should just read "The state of California has found life to be a hazardous activity" and just stick it to your forehead.

The state of Washington requires the same type of sticker. I think this was to answer a sad event where 2 girls died when sitting on the back of a tournament ski boat with their feet on the swim platform with the boat underway (slowly).

You wanna run your blower constantly? Go for it. It hurts nothing, other then slight wear and tear on the blower (they're cheap anyway), and battery drain if you shut off the engine and leave the blower on.
Shutting down when someone is near the prop is just good common sense.

Surprised that we in MN don't have a dire warning sticker like CA. We're almost as much of a nanny state.

LOL no kidding, and to think MN is closed right now......does that mean water patrol is still on the lakes since the State Parks are closed? Not that I am coming over this weekend I am staying in WI.....

Ya I seen the news and they stated they were going to on the lake this weekend, just thought I would open a can of worms. If you decide to come off Balsam this weekend come just north to Bone Lake and chill, I think the fireworks are Sunday night on the south end.
