Running a Yamaha Outboard while flushing motor

I recently bought a 19' center console bay boat with a 130 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard. It is a 2003 model. I returned from having it in the water and set up the ear muffs with my water hose. I tried to start the motor and let it idle while it was flushing but when I did the motor tilt would come on and raise the motor. I tried it several times but I could not start the motor without the tilt coming up. Any suggestions on why this is happening? The manual says the motor can be run while the flushing is going on but it will not cooperate. Thanks. This is my first boat and I want to make sure I flush the motor properly.

are you sure you didn't inadvertently press the trim button when you tried to start the motor?

This is a very strange problem, you should have no issues running the motor on the muffs.

I was going to say something similar, but that seemed way to obvious to consider. :D
Are there Remote/Trailer Trim buttons on the transom?

This is going to be interesting, whatever it is!

Water's too cold. :lol:The motor doesn't like to get it's foot wet!

Now that's funny, don't care who you are.

I don't know, depends on where he is located, water maybe too hot.

I would be disconnecting the different T&T switches to see if one is causing the problem, it has to be one of those or maybe the wiring is shorting out.

Did you pull the cowling to make sure no water was spraying around under there with motor running?

No. The switches are not close together. I think, after seeing some other responses, that I may have a short in the trim switch on the motor. Thanks for the input.

I think you are right. After I posted this, I went up and fueled up and when I got out of the truck the trim was running. I wiggled the trim switch on the motor and it went off. I think the switch on the motor is bad. I am going to check into it further and replace it if necessary. I think that has something to do with my problem. I will ask you something else, while I am talking to you, my motor has a separate hose hook up that flushes through everything and I wonder if I need to flush through it and the ear muffs? Seems to do the same thing.

Yes there is a trim switch on the motor and I think it is bad. I will check into it further and let you all know. Thanks for the input and help!

You can disassemble those switches and clean the contacts

I believe the hose on the motor will flush the head and should drain down through your pump as well. I think it was put there more for when your places that you don't have the muff's you can still flush your system with fresh water. I think the muff's would do a better job, especially for flushing your water pump....Sherm

My manual says not to run the engine if using the motor flush hose.

My manual says not to run the engine if using the motor flush hose.

If the flush connection is after/above the water pump, the water will be flushing the motor just fine but the water pump will NOT be pumping anything and the impeller will be damaged from the friction of running dry.
