I just bought my first boat. I was not able to check compression when I bought it . Has a 1983 Evenrude 90 v4 . Got 120psi on all cylinders except one which was 0. To0k it appart this morning and found that the Piston ring is gone. The Head is scored and pited very badly. and the cylinder is ruined, Scored and rusted. the cause appeared to be the head gasket was blown at the water jacket and alowed water into the cylinder.

My question is : Does this sound hopeless for a rebuild and If I rebuild can I get a sleeve for the cylinder. If i do is this some thing I can do myself. I have a pretty complete shop. ( press , lathe, mill etc.)

My other question is what other damage can water and peices of broken ring cause in the motor. It did lock up and shear the key on the flywheel.

If you could post a pic the rebuild experts will be better able to lead you in terms of sleeves and boring, etc... Dhadley is the man you will want to talk to. Good luck.

Re: ruined cyl and piston

Once you have it torn down and inspected, you can see what the bad cyl looks like. It is possible that an overbore of .030 may clean that one cylinder up. It is permissible to bore out just one cylinder. A new piston and a new head and you are ready to go. If any of the bridges between the ports are cracked, or if you have to resleeve it the block may not be economically salvageable.
