Well I got my boat in the water today with the 1968 65hp Johnson ran really good at wot but rough idle stalls in reverse and forward I either have to turn up idle or adjust low speed jets witch I took out and cleaned but didn't know the right way to adjust them I know u turn all the way in but don't know how many turns to back off if some one could tell Kentish would be great my tac don't work so adjusting throttle will have to be done my touch and feel the previous owner decide to wire the boat himself and I'm having hard time matching the stuff up to my motor he had a 70hp evenrud 1983 it was blown so he gave me the boat so I bought this 1968 Johnson for $75

Re: Rough idle

Seat it lightly. Back out 1.5 turns. Start and allow to warm to operating temp. Between idle screw and low idle jet, get engine to the maximum lowest idle you can achieve. Turn jet at that point back out 1/4 of a turn more. Then set idle screw to recommended rpm in gear in the lake tied to the dock. Or you can leave it on the trailer while adjusting. All adjustments should be done in water and in gear. Post back results.

Will do tomorrow another note being a pin drive do I really need the cone thing that goes on the prop I lost mine out on the water and also is there a way to adjust the throttle cable itself seems like I move throttle most of the way befor engine revs up it seems like cable is stretched alittle and thanks a bunch to all the people here at boats who have helped me out with this motor

Re: Rough idle

Replace cable if stretched to far. And as for the cone, don't know what lower unit you have, but some torque to 12ft lbs and then the cone and then the cotter pin. Post back.

Re: Rough idle

Well I was doing what u said montel when I heard some grinding coming from the lower unit turns out the drive shaft is striped out where it connects to the waterpump.on the end of drive shaft it looks like there is a replaceable end where u pound out a little pin and hammer off the end that goes over the splined end of the water pump I've looked on the gear case parts section on marine engine and can't find it on there only a whole drive shaft a.and also there is a lot of playin the prop .when u turn prop by hand it turns almost half way befor it catches I don't know if this is normal might have to replace more stuff any ideas would be a great help
