Thanks guys! Looking back to this photo taken in January makes me feel pretty good about where I'm at:

Looking good Chem! Hope you make the splash this week!
Some food for thought on the cabin door. I know what you mean about it being in the way, but on Chiefs without seat boxes the door can swing all the way open to the cabin wall, essentially being out of the way. I run with mine open like that most of the time, although on cool crisp mornings it's nice to have it shut to block the wind coming through the cabin when the hatch is open. I keep the hatch open for bow line access and for messing with the anchor. It's easier to open and shut the cabin door than the hatch. That's my boating style though, yours may differ.
I'm going to have to take another look at my helm seat too. Maybe all I need is a spacer to be able to fold it without control cable interference.
Looking really good though!

Aye, aye, GaB!

You know, it's kind of funny...the other [crappy glasser] boats I've had in the past never had half of the safety or overbuilt features that this boat has, but I used them all the time. There's something about starting a project like this that makes you want to get it all done, and say that you're DONE. I don't think that will ever happen, so, yeah, it's time to get this thing in the water!

See you dudes from the majestic waters of Lake Champlain real soon!

EDIT: Thanks, rheagler! I do still have the aluminum door, so I'll see how it all works out. I didn't really align the bulkheads with that in mind, but I could make it work. Cheers.

A couple of notes: the engine runs better than it ever has for me for some reason. Starts immediately, idles at 600, in gear idle speed is between 2.3 and 2.7 MPH. Cruised beautifully on plane at 4000 RPM and 23 MPH...but, get this: it was a glass calm day with no wind, and I hit 33 MPH at 5400 RPM at WOT. The Johnny truly ran like a champ today.

A minor issue: this boat is light, and maybe a tiny bit top-heavy as a result of putting the batteries and a big fuel tank above the deck. With just me in the boat today, it lists very noticeably to starboard, so I kind of have to stand in the middle, though it's less noticeable on plane. I think I just need to put all my gear on the port side in the cabin. It was just surprising with a full 18 gallon tank on the port side that it was still so susceptible to my weight (180 lbs).

Anyway, aside from that minor stuff, the splash could not have possibly been more perfect. I'm really psyched. No chop today, but she took some big wakes really well, and was extremely dry...like, no spray whatsoever. I think she's a keeper.

EDIT: Anybody know how to fix a transducer rooster tail?

Another edit: I pulled the plug after running for maybe two hours...not a drop of water. I was more excited about that than I should have been. I knew it should be watertight, after all the gluvit-ing and re-riviting and 5200-ing of the transom, but it's such a great feeling to know that it all worked.

Don't cha just love it when a plan comes together? *insert Hugh Jass thumbs up emoticon here*

You did a great job on this build and should be very proud! I'm sure you're going to get many years of enjoyment out of this boat and catch boat loads of fish!

The listing you spoke of is pretty normal and all you have to do is play with your weight distribution until you find the sweet spot for everything.

Now... where's the dang fish??? I wanna see some fish, fish slime, and fish blood on this boat, I wanna see it slimed and blooded from fore to aft so you can tell me how easily the vinyl cleaned up afterward (you're gonna love that part!).

Thanks for taking the time and effort to post your build here for our entertainment!

Lookin' good, Chem. You'll figure out the weight loading as you play with her. The rooster tail can be the xducer too low into the water or the tail end is tipped down below level. Try tipping it up a little before loosening the screws.

Most importantly - STARCRAFT ON THE WATER. :D

Outstanding work! :D I don't think my Chief will see water besides rain for quite some time

Yah my transducer soaks the side of my Johnny too, I wonder if raising it up a bit would help. Mine didn't do that before the resto and I reused the same holes in the transom. Maybe before the next outing I will test it out raised up some.

Hey, jig and GaB, you guys were absolutely crucial to the execution of this project, along with JB and jas and some other really awesome folks on this site. I literally could not have done this without your help...so, thank you so much. Y'all are my tin boat brethren, my aluminum allies, my metal boat magnates.

Anyway, thanks. It's been awesome hanging here, and I'll continue to update as I get my fishing gear rigged up.

Cheers!

Yeah, I'm going to mess around with it. Mine's in PVC board, so I can move it wherever with no through hull ramifications. It's not a big deal, but it annoys me for some reason.

We didn't do any work, you did Chem. But thanks for the thanks.

On the xducer, before I snugged the tilting (?) bolt when getting it adjusted, I bumped it while launching. Sprayed like a jetski. Reached over the back and pulled it up some and magic, no more spray and it worked the way it should. Tightened the bolt it hasn't roostered since. That's why I said to try tilting it up some first. Worth a try.

Got a 75 Just like it--with a 90 merc--love it and have fished in the ocean with it off the outer banks here in NC --you wont regret fixing it up. Have spent the weekend on it at the local lake also

Well isn't this an interesting turn of events :watermelon:

Congrats!

Thanks for the mention, but I had little to do w/ how great YOU did getting it put back together (mostly) and back in the water!

Congrats again!
