The Iwo Jima was anchored in DaNang with one of the 36’ whale boats being used to run people to the shore for various reasons.
I was an Engineman and my job that day was to assist in getting the boat back to the David. The coxswain started the engine and shifted to reverse, right at that time I was looking down and saw a short piece of rope that was tied to the ramp that get sucked under the boat which wound us up to the ramp and stopped the engine. After discussing the problem using every word in Navy parlance I told the coxswain we had 1 shot. I told him to start the engine and shift to forward, the propeller unwound the rope and we were on our way back to the David lines to hoist the boat back up.
