Re: Rookie mistakes

Same thing happened to me a few years back (1994)... Just sit and wait for the water. :D :D

You could at least wash the bottom while you wait.

Oh man that boat is high and dry, glad it all worked out!

That's an area that gets 15 foot tides... We only had to wait about 5 hours... Could have been worse. ;)

Re: Rookie mistakes

The first shark looking fish is a spiny dogfish and a huge nuisance fish they eat the bait before the salmon do. The last pics are rockfish and are actually illegal to retain on the hood canal, cant keep any east of Marine area 6, they are easy to catch and are all over the place but state says they are endangered, they are the reason you cant fish for bottomfish deeper then 120 ft. They are good eating just don't get caught with one on the boat.

Its an odd year and pinks will be in but not until after June ,they are krill eaters so little pink hoochies work well on them just be easy setting the hook are pretty soft lipped so its easy to tear the hook out on them. If your trolling for them a rubber snubber helps.

Re: Rookie mistakes

The bass looking fish you caught were Quillback rockfish. Now for the reality check . Beaching your boat at low tide was the least of your problems. If you had been checked by the WDFW you could have potentially been sighted for fishing for salmon out of season. ( salmon doesn't open in hood canal until July 1st) The rock fish are closed to all fishing in hood canal. WDFW could have confiscated the boat regardless if it was a rental or not. Plus fines cited to you an everyone on the boat. To anyone from out of state you best make sure you are legal to fish and the fish your going after is in season. You got lucky by not being checked. Not knowing the law is not an excuse for breaking the law in Washington. Always make sure to check regulations wherever you fish. I am assuming with the timing of the post you attempted to fish in May for pinks. Just an FYI pinks only run on odd numbered years. Not to discourage anyone from coming to Washington to fish , just make sure you are legal to do so.

Well, the fishing trip took place the first week in August about 4 years ago, so there wasn't any legal issues there. We weren't targeting the rock fish. We were just drifting around off of rock points with some jigs and happened to catch a few of them. None were kept, we released all of the fish we caught after a few pictures. My military buddy had been stationed there for 2 years and fished a lot, so he knew the regs. Just because we were from out of state doesn't mean we didn't check the regs.

Re: Rookie mistakes

Thats my bad for assuming. If you want another shot at pinks they are running this year. Just bring your tide guide or at least a clam shovel and oyster schucker for something to do if you get beached at low tide again.

Nothing better than fresh clams and oysters.

I really miss living in the NW, nothing like that can be found here in Missouri!
