post a call for Dhadley and ask if anyone in the south florida area surfaces heads that you can trust. if you UPS it to Rons marine in portsmouth VA he will do it and ship it back. you can call them at 1-757-397-3451. they do all my machine work. did ya get the t-stat bolts out of the head ? if not they can do that as well.

Re: Rodbolt where are you?

yeah, i heated them up, and they came right out. I appreciate all the info. you have been very helpful to me. thanks.

I want to hook up my temp guage that i bought, and the question i have is: there is only one wire by the ignition for the temp guage, so di i hook that up in the s post, the ground in the g post, and the power to the i post?

I bought just the gauge (used)it is made by teleflex inc. it doesnt have any mounting brackets, it has 4 posts on the back.. L,G,S,I.

my fuel gauge is not working either, how do i test the sending unit?

Re: Rodbolt where are you?

hello
one gauge at a time
with the gauge you have to have the proper temp sender. chyslers of that vintage had no provision for a gauge, just a switch for the horn. teleflex makes a universal fit that reads the temp from the head and has a bracket for mounting. its about 50 dollars or so. I would rather you reinstall the temp alarm horn and forget about the gauge. overheat on an outboard happens rapidly. most the time some one looks at the gauge and thinks, man I wonder how long its been pegged. the horn alerts you to look.
on your fuel gauge. test the grnd or G wire. with the keyswitch or 12 volts applied to the I or IGN terminal then trace the send or S wire to the tank sender. standard color is pink but who knows. if you have a ground at the guage and 12v on the I terminal then at the tank jump the wire on the sender to ground momentarily. the guage should deflect full scale. if it does the sender in the tank is suspect or the tank is no longer grounded to the electrical system. if it does not test the terminals at the gauge. jump S to Ground with 12v applied on the I terminal. if it deflects now check the sender wire. the standard gauge is 33-230 ohms or so.33ohms is full and 250 ohms is empty.you can remove the sender for testing. the sender is a float operated potentiometer. its not voodoo.

Re: Rodbolt where are you?

I looked at the impeller and it looks good to me. I wonder if i should take all the rest of it apart?

Before i go taking more stuff apart i want to make sure i understand how it works. so when the mtor is started the impeller sucks the water up from water ports on the bottom of the unit. the water goes around the lower unit to the impeller, which then pushes the water up the water tube into the head and piston. Am i correct in this assumption?

Re: Rodbolt where are you?

hello
the impeller is toast
that housing looks iffy.
I belive the spring and collars behind your t-stat acts as a pressure valve. I cant remember when they moved them from the port side of the block to the head. your assumption on the water flow is correct. replace the impeller, wear plate and gaskets at a minimum. you may get another season out of the housing.
the purpose of the trim tab is to help counteract prop torque from affecting steering. if your t-stat has a spring between the cover and the t-stat that is the relief. inpect the seat in the head if it has one.

Re: Rodbolt where are you?

I really appreciate your expertise in this area rodbolt. You do not know how much you have helped me, by saving money, and also gaining the knowledge that i need to do the upkeep. however i do have one more question. when i took the impellor out of the housing i did not notice which way it was facing. Does it matter how i put the impellor in the housing?

the t-stat comes in one piece(spring attatched), there were no seperate springs or anything between it and the head.

Re: Rodbolt where are you?

hello
wow let me dig about but someplace I think it has a relief valve. cant remember. install the gasket and plate. install the drive key. slide the impeller down the shaft. lube the housing with dishwashing liquid. bring the housing down on the impeller till it rests on it. now while rotating the drive shaft clockwise push down on the impeller. if you quit turning to get another grip quit pushing until ya turn some more. once the housing is down use grease on the bolt threads and button it up.
