Hey Guys and Gals I have brought the boat inside the geeerage and have done a little bit of work. I removed the benches and the swivel seats that were attached so well wit sheetrock screws..It took me ..hmmm 6 minutes to remove the both of them. Then I tackled the floor. Sheetrock screws again. All the heads were spun..2 screws out of a dozen were not rotted.I felt like Geraldo Rivera opening King Tuts Tomb as I lifted up the old floor. Upon removal, I noticed the original floor was partially cut out and the new one placed on top. Then I saw these round half circles with a very thick matting glassed over everything. I haven't seen this type of floor here. No foam. The stringers and "haystack mounds" are extremely stable/durable. The matting is hard as a rock with no soft areas. It was damp in some areas but not saturated. What the heck is under the round humps? Air? I stuck my hand (2 fingers) inside one of them and there's nothing there I can feel. Tomorrow I will drill some small holes in them to see what comes out. I am trying not to be to optimistic by what I see, any comments and suggestions on what I have here and what I should do to determine the real condition.

Anyone shed some light on that engine overheat glass light? How it worked.

Hi Pauly,

Concerning pics and file sizes... Is this what you're looking for?

The way I did this is to go into your photobucket link and copy the image tag into this post.

My opinion is that they are there to support your decking plywood, add regidity to the hull and serve as as form of flotation.

Hi Pauly,

Well, your "haystacks" have me stumped... I'm just afraid that there's rot lurking in there somewhere...

resize your pictures so they fit the forum.. most will not read it, if we have to scan side to side. i won't.

Hey Pauly,

No prob on the pics... In photobucket, click on the pic, choose resize, and choose 640 x 480... Just be sure that you have backups of the original photos.

Hi Pauly,

Me again,

You know... I've been looking at your pics, and if those tubes are actually hollow, it almost looks like someone laid down some hollow tubes, draped woven map over them, and then saturated in resin. Weird. If for no other reason, given the shape of the cloth, I'd say it has to come out.

Alan

P.S. About the pics... You can also resize in any number of apps so long as you keep the aspect ratio the same. Beyond that, the beauty of using something like photobucket is that the actual file isn't stored on the iboats server... It's just a hassle scrolling back and forth and up and down. I moderate a couple of wooden boat building forums, and write for a bird blog... As long as the actual file isn't on my server unless I put it there, all is cool. And yeah, I do a ton of scrolling. For me, not a prob. If the pics continue to give you a hassle, post again, and I can walk you through it even if you have to use MS Paint.

Re: Rocket Renovation..started

Thanks again Stoutcat..I have picasa and that can resize..thats how I got the first set on here..but they are just small..I will try the photobucket tomorrow.

I wonder if the tubes ar original. i will drill into a few tomorrow to see whats doing. I am prepared to rip out completely and start from scratch. This just caught me off guard seeing what is there. Again ..hard as nails I can stand on the tubes and they dont budge. Stringers stern to bow solid..but have to check cores tomorrow. Thanks for sticking with me tonight..Hope to have the troops chime in tomorrow.

Re: Rocket Renovation..started

posting as you did the link is fine, then we can click on each pictures to enlarge there. i resized you pics, they can be clicked on to enlarge.

i would tear the rest of it out, you never know what is there, could be a mush or wet stuff under there, adding unwanted weight to the boat.

The idea behind what they did isn't bad, but the execution was.

It's not uncommon to use cardboard tubes cut in half as a shape to glass over for reinforcement, plastic pipe does the same thing and had they done it correctly it would be fine. It looks like they sort of laid the pieces in place (with little care) and then put down large sections of roving (with even less care) without cutting it to fit. It's hard to tell from the pics I looked at if there was any mat used under the roving, so if they used polyester resin and no mat, it would still need to come out even if they did a better job.

Re: Rocket Renovation..started

I did cut open the half round and they are hollow. They are pretty darn brittle now after a night of drying out and definately coming out. I cut a section of a stringer open and its pretty nappy whats left of the stringers..absolutely nada. So no biggy dealy, its a complete floor renovation. Heres a question. At the rear of the boat what would have been under the splashpan, there are 2 half rounds that were done correctly. They have several layers of glass on them and are in good shape. I used a flashlight to look in the drain holes and yes..there used to be wood stringers in there as well. I am thinking these will also come out as i have to replace transom...would I need to "round"them up again after installing new stringers or could I just glass in the stringers and lay flat floor over?

Re: Rocket Renovation..started

Its been a while since last post. I removed the cap on the boat and I was amazed at how many screws were used to secure the cap. There were 2 different types used so I assume that at one time more were added. It took approximately 1 hour to complete. I have a few questions.

1)It seems the rubrail was bumped into a dock. (see pic) Its crushed and when pressed with your finger it gives. Spongy sort of. The area is about 1'x 3". Whats the proper way to repair something like this? Epoxy alone? or with some cloth as well?

2)The cap rail that has all the holes in it. I want to get rid of all those holes and beef that up a bit. Whats the proper way to handle that repair?

3) The bulkhead at the bow (hull). Where it steps up. Thats hollow I think. When ya bang on the floor area there it resonates like a bass drum. Should I drill holes and pour foam to fill this area? I would imagine that would quiet things down and add stability to the front hull and cushion it a bit when taking on a wave. If I did that, would I then need to foam under the new floor? The front hull area is at least 15-20" deep and 3'wx3'l.Thats a good amount of foam.

I am beginning to plastic off my side of the garage and set up heat for the winter. I am hoping things will pick up the next few weeks.
