40hp super seahorse electromatic shift. Today I was out for 30 min or so just causing around. At 1 point I gave it some more throttle and we stopped going forward. I believe it shifted into neutral. I am capable of going into reverse but it won't go forward. I have punch marks on my prop and hub so I know it isn't spun. Any ideas?

Find the green and blue wires at the back of the engine.-----One simple test you can do is switch the wires at the motor.----Report if you now have forward and no reverse.

I'm not finding them in the back except where the plunge down to the lower unit. Not seeing a place to switch them. It there a way for me to do that by the forward controls?

You found the wires. There should be two rubber sleeves on them. Slide the sleeves up the wires to expose the disconnects.

You need to learn to work on this simple motor.----Few shops will help you with older motors.

Then switch wires and report on what happens.----And there is no need to run the motor for this test.----Prop can be turned one way and not the other way in gear.

That means you have an electrical issue in wiring harness or detective shift switch.-----The new switch is pricy .----Take control box apart and inspect.-----Your location ?

North east Wisconsin. I will take it all apart when I get home from work.

Ok. Well I did the first test wrong. When I switch the wires I only have reverse. Does that mean it is the forward shift coil?

So in one test the problem moved, in the second test the problem, is where it originally was.
Do you have a Volt Meter, or Test Light?

Same thing happened to me. TWICE. The wires burn out. I got it fixed back in the day, but nobody will touch it these days. Some say it was an awesome setup - I don't agree.

OMC is out of business. Not many mechanics left. Try googling a local dealer than used to be OMC.

Glad I got rid of it years ago.

Do an ohm check on the electro magnets.-----Should read the same.----Sounds like the tab on the forward spring broke.----Be an easy fix here.

Ok they are not the same. I get no reading on the reverse (blue wire) which works and I get a reading on the forward (green wire). Around 12
