Bill if they are worn through just put in new rivets if they are puled through then we may need pictures of how bad it is to give you ideas on repair.

Drill out what is left of the rivet to the next larger diameter and then install a new rivet. You can use solid rivets if you know how to buck them and can get to the back side, or you can use a pop rivet. You can get sealed end pop rivets special order, or you can use a regular pop rivet and seal it yourself. I had to do just that on my father's Starcraft Islander when I couldn't get to the back side. I used the sealed end rivets. Here is an example of a sealed end pop rivet. http://www.rivetdirect.com/closedendrivets.html

I'll try to describe hole to you.. i have pic's but file size too large to attach.

The hole looks like it was countersumk. The boat apparently had a few loose rivets for quite a while prior to my owning. The original rivets were 3/16 but these two holes are now 7/32 only in bottom skin, ribs are not worn. The bottom is .90 aluminum. The beginning of hole measures approximately .375 and is worn down what appears to be about .40 before taper begins. A 7/32 rivet head will actually fall into recess. Don't think that even by going to 1/4 rivets that I'd have enough grip.

Bill get yourself a photo bucket account makes life much simpler and you will be able to put full sie pics in your posts instead of just thumbnails. The rivet issue you should able to fix with washers ( the actual name isnt a washer ) I cant think at the moment of the name of the actual product but they sell them usually in the same area rivets are in the hardware store.

Go to a larger and longer rivet. You may need to install an aluminum washer to cover a larger bearing surface.

Larger aluminum rivets and a coat of gluvit. Use the gluvit on both sides and use multiple coats on the outside to build up a barrier coat to preserve the worn aluminum.

Here is what the holes look like, if I did everything right (new to photobucket)

I think you were talking about "Backing washers" but I thought they were used on the braded side of rivet. Never used on head side.

Bill thats a nice flat area there I would run with backing washers on both sides just to be safe and then gluvit the areas real well and you should be good as new. Either that or drill out the holes as wide as the outside opening and fit rivets to them.

Re: Rivets pulled through bottom

You could always go with swell neck rivets or brazier heads. The swell necks have a slight bevel coming from the bearing surface of the head to the rivet shaft. They would fill the void. The brazier heads have a larger bearing surface and a washer wouldn't be needed. Here is more info on the swellneck rivets:
http://www.brainardrivet.com/bsn.htm Info on brazier head rivets: http://www.rivetsinstock.com/rivet16.htm

I just did a quick search on the rivets, never bought anything from either company.

Walt;
I contacted the company that makes the BSN rivets and asked them about using them, this is their reply....

"You should not use BSN rivets in this application, just standard rivets."

Just for information, will use the Brazer heads! Thanks to you, Bob and Rick.
