Rivet replacement??

I have a 1981 Starcraft SF 14S and some of the rivets on the ribs are missing and/or loose (maybe a dozen). I would like to replace these. I was wondering if closed rivets and a long handles rivet gun would work or do I need to use an air powered rivet gun? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to spend alot as it is only about 12 rivets.

Re: Rivet replacement??

Stop at your local airport and talk to the A&P (Mechanic) airframe and powerplant. Measure the head of the rivet as well as the shank. Chances are he won't have any that large. Fastenal and other fastner companies can order the size you need. A&P's work on aluminum airplanes and have all the tools to buck a couple of rivets or tighten up the loose ones. I'm sure he can find some time to help you out for not a lot of jack if you prepare and mark all the rivets. You need to have access from both sides. A profesional repair.

Closed end blind rivets will work fine.

You can set a 3/16 blind rivet with the regular rivet gun, but you need the big long handled rivet tool for setting the 1/4" diameter rivets.

Dip the ends of the rivets in marine epoxy or 3M 5200 before installing forwaterproof insurance.

I buy all of my rivets online at Jay-Cees, excellent service and selection.

If you have a compressor and air hammer you can buy a rivet set and .25 lb of universal head solid rivets from a aircraft supply co. like aircraft spruce for ~$10+ shipping. You could always use dome head ss screws and nuts.
