I recently bought a project boat with an older Mariner 50hp 3 cylinder( year unknown as the id plate missing)and Quicksilver Controller with an 8 wire harness going into it as well as a 4 wire flat bundle. The wiring is all messed up and I want to rewire the controller and have several questions:
What is the plug(3-prong)at the engine end of the 4 flat wire bundle?
What is the plug in the front of the controller and what wires go to it?
What is the purpose of the run/stop switch and what wires go the that?
Any other help/advice is appreciated!

Go to the maxrules site and look at the common wiring diagrams. Try to find one that is close, which should be by year.

The 3 wire connector on front exterior of the MerControl should be for gauges. It will be ign power, ground and tach signal. See below for wire colors.

The flat 4 wire might be for power trim. The older Mercs had a trim limit switch and a 3 push button control panel. Newer controls had the PTT switches built into the MerControl.

The 8 wire harness would go to the ign key and control for the motor operation. The wires should be for power, ign power, ground, ign kill, choke, starter solenoid, tach signal and overheat. The color of the wires changed over the years. Newer wire colors are red, purple, black, black/yellow, yellow/black, yellow/red, grey, brown or tan, respectively.

Older wire colors would have been red, white, black, salmon or orange, grey, yellow, brown, tan, respectively. Some older motors did not have the overheat alarm.

Remember the MerControl has the neutral safety switch built in. A wire goes from the ign switch start terminal to the neutral safety switch to the yellow/red or yellow wire, which then goes to the starter solenoid.
