Rewinding a stator (398-4793)

I was recently given a Thundercraft 160 Magnum, with a Mercury 850 strapped to the back end. I was told the stator would need to be replaced, and boy they weren’t kidding. When I removed the flywheel, all I had was the stator frame—no black epoxy…no magnet wire, no windings, just a bare metal frame. The old man who owned it before me was actually prepping to rewind it. Unfortunately, though, he passed away two weeks after stripping the stator, taking the number of turns to the grave with him.

I’m happy to rewind the stator—that’s easy enough. But, I need to know the exact number of turns on each pole.

Does anyone either have that knowledge readily available, or does anyone have an old, dead Merc stator (398-4793) lying around that I could have? I’ll happily pay for the shipping.

Thanks!

What is the year/serial Nr. of this motor? If it's the encapsulated type it's going to be hard to give the number of turns without destroying it, might as well use a good one.

Make: Mercury
Model: 850
SN: 3740147
Year: 71-73 is my best guess

I can post a picture of it later this afternoon.

The stator was the encapsulated type but Bernie chiseled all of the plastic off before carefully unwinding it. I know he counted the number of turns because he made a point to tell me, “You can’t just wrap these up, willy-nilly, you’ve got to keep track of how many turns it gets.”

I’d love to use a new part, but paying $400+ for a part I can easily fix with my own hands is a non-starter. This is why I’d be thrilled to find a stator with blown smoke seals. All I need is the number of turns, and hell, I might be able to give back to the Old Merc community by rewinding these things for half of what CDI gets for theirs.
