Reupholstering: Snap-in cushions? Nautolex underlining material?

Planning some reupholstering on a 1978 Starcraft 15' Trihull.

If possible, want to avoid using wood backboards for the cushions/bolsters in the open bow and around the cabin, as the old wood rotted due to trapped moisture in the foam. Also would like to have a way to let water drain out of the foam. All these bolsters are about 8" wide, 2 to 3" thick, and range from about 16" to 36" long--that is, none are particularly huge or heavy.

Has anyone here made (or bought) upholstery cushions or bolsters, without wood backing, using snap fasteners / snap-in? (I know people make snap-in seat-bottom cushions, but I'm talking about small cushions for a vertical installation.) How does that work out for you? Do they really hold on well enough during trailering and running? (My fear is that they will let go and fly away) Any guidance as to how closely to space the snaps? (I'm thinking every 10-12"--or a minimum of three--across the top edge, and another 1 or 2 per cushion across the bottom edge just to keep them from flapping)

Second, has anyone here used a vinyl-coated polyester mesh material for underside/backside of cushions to let water drain out; e.g., Pfifertex or Nautolex underlining material? (I'd strongly prefer trying something like this over trying to plastic-wrap the foam) Does the water really drain out?

Thanks.

Post buried all the way to page 5 with no replies...

Nobody has snap-in cushions / bolsters or has used mesh underlining on cushions?
