Help me solve a debate with the wife. No surprise that Bayliner did not use the best material for the cockpit. After one season use there are a few spots mainly corners that show slight signs of ware. She is not the best at being gental with it. I know one day I will have to get the cockpit redone. I was wondering for those of you that have done it or do it for a living how much it would cost? Of course I would want to use decent materials. I have attached a photo of the cockpit. The debate is over how much it will cost. I am thinking around 2K when it needs to be done in what I would assume about 4 more seasons. I am kinda anal about it looking new. I think worn upholstery looks trashy.

Re: Reupholster Cockpit

$2K is not a bad figure for planning purposes. Nautolex Vinyl is what some of the high-end brands use. I would see how it goes after another couple of seasons of wear. You may be thinking about trading in/up by then and would not have to deal with a re-upholstery job.

Typically, you should get at least 10 years out of the upholstery. The upholstery on my boat is 18 years old and I figure it may need a re-do in about 4 more years.

I wish I could trade up in a few years but I bought he boat new so I am sure that I will still owe allot more on it then its worth. Thats OK. I love the boat, its a great weekend home during the summer, she is not too big to handle. Though I do wish I spend the 15K more on the 28 footer with the 11 foot beam.

Up her in my neck of the woods.......an interior on a typical boat with bow cushions is around 1K for single color. About 2K if you want materiel's that have stripes and designs sewn in.

Here's my 5 cents.
Boats, like cars are built down to a price, so your comment about the quality of the vinyl is fairly accurate. That said the materials used should be 'fit for purpose'. If the upholstery is showing signs of wear and the boat is still under warranty, I would be having a debate with Bayliner people, not your wife.
As for keeping upholstery looking good, like the rest of the boat it has to be maintained to keep its appearance. As the owner, maybe its time to detail the upholstery, clean it and put vinyl protectant on to help it weather and wear better.
One final observation, is your comment about your wife 'not being the most gentle with the upholstery'. If that is a genuine, rather than tongue in cheek comment, then if won't matter how much you spend on upholstery, she won't respect it and you're just wasting your money IMHO. I hate it when folks don't respect other people's property, no matter how close they are.
Unless you bought the boat new as a long term investment, I'd just keep it clean and tidy and consider a trade-in (the boat, not the wife) down the line.

The debate is really over bringing a dog on the boat.

Then let the dog tear it up, use it for a bnbathroom or whatever and redo it just 1 time, when you decide to sell. Funny, my dog loves to curl up and sleep or walk around ..... well behaved

Am I missing something here or are my eyes finally gone. I cannot see any reference to a dog in the first post. The OP mentions his wife only????

I've always had dogs on the boat. It depends on the size of the dog about how much you need to worry about the seats. With the bigger lab the key was towel placement to keep his nails from doing damage. We actually used a kitchen rug tucked into his entry/exit spot that worked perfect.

My 2 dogs now weigh about 20 pounds each and I don't worry about anything with them. They won't jump from the bank into the boat so I have to pick them up (rinse paws) and then put them in. I don't think they have enough weight on them to really do damage to the seats.

There WILL be hair on the seats and floor. Nothing like the bright white to bring that out.

Im just going to stand my ground on the no dog issue. Too much work and I don't want to pay $2K so Phido can keep us company on the boat.
