Re: Restricked exhaust on Mercruiser 130??

Sorry Don, it is a 1988 Rinker V170 with a Mercruiser inline 4 cylinder 3.0. I am helping a friend with this boat, I am a retired auto mechanic. I have many years of experiance but not much marine work in my past. I think it is an problem with the intake/exhaust gasket or manifold. There is water leaking out of one of the exhaust bellows, not sure if water should be in the exhaust at all. I can see where someone in the past has had the manifold off. Seems as if there is plenty of fuel, dwell and timing has been set and carb has been replaced and adjusted. We did have a an issue with water entering the fuel tank via the bow mounted vent. It no longer takes in water but I think many folks before me toyed with many things trying to get it to run on water. The motor starts and runs well at idle and mid range speeds but when you really croud the throttle the engine sounds like it has restricked exhaust and will not get up on plane. It reminds me of a car with a plugged convertor. Plugs seem a bit sooted up as if it is running rich, but the can also happen with restricked exhaust.

While it's possible to be an exhaust restriction, it probably isn't. Pull the drive and look for pieces of the flappers that may be in the drive or in the bellhousing.
Have you done a compression test? Anyone mess with the valve adjustment.
