Johnson 6hp sat for -20 years. Good compression on both cylinders. Cooling passages clear and flowing. Carb, ignition, fuel pump rebuild planned. Missing lower unit just worrying about the power head for now. Looking for sanity checks before ordering parts. Any help would be appreciated.

These are fantastic / simple motors.-----When I pick up one of these the block is torn down for a complete inspection.---Have 4 of them on the work bench now.---Consumable parts are easy to find.----If it still has the original head gasket , you should replace it with improved one.----Sierra is the best deal for that item..----Check thermostat as I usually find them stuck open or missing.

good find ! but don't overspend $$$ it may be best to find another donnor engine a complete one to work on and just use your amputee for parts.

Gee, didn't OMC make those engines (with minor mods) for 40 years? They always used them on the rental crab boats here at the Jersey Shore.

Yah with it missing the lower unit makes me not want to put so much into it but I have been looking for donors and even good running outboards

I don’t know exactly but I know they had ran for a long while with the same basic layout I’d guess from the early 70s to maybe the late 80s or even early 90s

That 6 hp was from 1965 to 79.----But a complete 5.5 hp lower unit from 1954 to 64 can also be used with minor modifications.

Depending where you live many gearcase's can be found. Modern day economics means that if a powerhead is shot it becomes a parts motor if somebody doesn't rebuild it which is rare in my area.

If you have fun playing around with it, then I say go for it!

Big shops do not work on these " old things " anymore.----They are a fine piece of machinery and worth repairing.----Your location?
