About a month ago I picked up an old 12 ft Seaking v bottom aluminum fishing boat to play with for $120 off of craigslist. One of the previous owners had hit something and put a gash in it which the welded, poorly, and didn't bother fixing the resulting dent. So the first thing I well be working on well be to sand down the weld and start smoothing out the dent. Once that's done I well check to see if it leaks, has silicone on it now, and if it does a guy I knows owns a fabrication shop which can do a better job of welding it back up.

After I get that all figured out I well probably use half and half vinegar and water to clean it and do the floor with roll on bed liner to help make it warmer on the water and hopefully help keep it from making too much noise if I drop the anchor inside :D The seats also need attention, I figure I well sand them down, paint on a coat of epoxy and then wrap them in indoor outdoor carpet.

The nice thing is it came with a nice set of 6.5 foot oars and I have an early 50's vintage 5hp Gale Buccaneer to push it around as well. It fits nicely in the back of my truck so I don't need a trailer for it but I am going to weld up a rack to hold it up about a foot above the bed and get a roof rack for the bow over the cab. I am thinking about adding some handles to the transom for lifting and a cleat on the bow for securing the anchor line.

Before I do anything of course I need to secure the title, the boat went through 2 different owners between me and the original owner, none of which bothered to transfer the title. The good thing is I was able to track down the original owner, mind you they sold it 12 years ago, and well be sending them the paperwork for them to sign by the end of the week so that should be good.

Anyway enough with the hideously long first post, here are a few pics which I took when I first picked it up, the one where it is in the back of my truck you can see the dent and weld.

Aside from the bad spot it looks like a pretty good deal.

I got the paper work back from the original owner the other day so now I can go down to the marine board and get the title all sorted out now.

Re: Restoring a 12ft seaking

I went down to the Marine board and got the rest of the paperwork taken care of so in about a week I well get the title and registration in the mail. I also picked up a couple bits of hardware for the boat, I got a couple large handles for the transom, a cleat for the bow and some hooks that I am think to use to make some holders for the oars with. I also picked up a quart of rustoleum paint for the interior, hunter green. I managed to get the front seat out with out much difficulty, half of the screws broke form being rusted. I sanded it down and gave it a coat of primer. The middle seat did not come out so nice and it is quite a bit soggier then the front so I think I well cut a new one to replace it with, I also need to find a new piece of foam as well to go underneath. With the middle seat out I started to peel the silicone that one of the previous owners had slathered all over the welded bit and started pounding out the dent.

Well I haven't had a chance to work on the boat any more yet but I have spent some more money, its one or the other right :D I found a 15lb Navy anchor at the scrap metal yard for $20 so I picked that up. I also got a sheet of 5/8" exterior fir plywood to make new seats for it as well as a few other random bits of hardware.

Hey thats a fine looking 12 footer!

I picked one up a couple of years ago in much worse shape and restored it. Of course like anything you're always making things better.

My SeaKing dousn't have a drain hole and thats the biggest problemwith it right now. So while your restoring it, take the time to add a drain plug. You'll be glad you did.
