1954 Johnson QD-15 10 hp.<br /><br />I have come to possess this at no cost to me (so far).<br /><br />Intial observations... <br />1) Top cylinder plug thread is fouled, cannot tighten plug properly.<br />2) Was able to thread my compression guage in enough to get a reading. Approx 50lbs on each cylinder... cold of course.<br />3) Not sure about spark.<br /><br />So in short, to get this up and running I will need at least... fix spark plug thread, R&R carb, most likely points, plugs and possibly magnetos.<br /><br />So I guess I'm looking for some feedback as whether or not to pursue this project or drop it like a hot potatoe.<br /><br />The overall condition of the motor is what I would consider normal for a 50 year old piece.

I had one briefly. Got it in trade and Garage Saled it. Sold it way too cheap, but it was to my Force instructor from a few years back. Had the tank and everything. Not sure if it ran, but wouldn't have taken much. If I'd wanted a small motor for a rowboat, that one would've been a top choice.<br /><br />You may still be able to get a head gasket for that. Check before you remove the head. You can Helicoil it with the head on. It's just aluminum. If you stuff a thin grease-soaked rope in there, it'll catch most of it. You might be able to grab the last thread if you remove the washer from the sparkplug, but I wouldn't rely on it. Just til you know if it's going to run decent.<br /><br />I'd say the biggest hurdle would be the gas tank. If it didn't come with one, finding one is going to set you back a good $50. They come up on eBay and at garage sales.<br /><br />Magneto parts are no problem. The coil plastic used before 1956 seems to last. You may not need new coils.

OK... I'll try a helicoil on the sparkplug.<br /><br />Found out my buddy has a pressurized tank in his garage. At worst, I can borrow it to see if this thing can run.<br /><br />What about the compression? Seems low to me.

Don't go too deep with this motor,but try to get it to run.We use 70psi as a cut-off point at our shop.(for these older motors)<br /><br />DHP
