hey everyone,

I'm new to this forum and i recently aquired a 1972 Newman charger... I dont have any pics of it just yet, but i was wondering if anyone knows where i can find information on this model boat...what the interior looked like "cause its stripped" and what options it came with...i am going to go back as origional looking as i can cause i dig the style of the older brady-bunch ski boats..I am planning on makeing it a fishing boat since so much of the interior is gone..It has a fiberglass floor and looks like carpet was glued right to it at one time..dont know if thats the way to restore it or if it needs some sort of wood floor...im new to repairing/restoring boats but have restored a few cars in the past.

thanks for any tips or comment you may have..
looking forward to learning all i can about boats,. boating and boat restoration.

tia

Anthony

Anthony

I also like that body style. Never owned one, just admired them from a distance. Good luck and keep posting.

Dave..

Re: Restoration of this boat

just wondering... any forum members know anything about these boats? problems to look for besides the usual...transom, stringers, etc...my boat as of now has a fiberglass floor..and seems REAL solid. but im wondering if the carpet was glued directly to the floor or if it had a wooden sub floor..i cant tell from the pictures in AMD rules post...

any other help would be appreciated...

thanks
anthony

Re: Restoration of this boat

Just sold a 73 Ebbtide Lakemaster that looks almost just like the 74 in the link and has a paint job just like you describe. Her floor was marine ply coated over with fiberglass. If you don't find any soft spots in the floor...dead give away..you're probably all right. Keep it covered and the nose up and plug out if you store it outside. Better yet, keep it stored inside and covered...cheap insurance for never having to redo the floor. Anderson's book Runabout Renovation is a good place to start learning. I pulled the lounge seats of the Lakemaster after she retired from family skiing and went to fisherman duty. Then I built some wooden boxes with hinged tops and put swivel seats on the tops for captain and co-captain seats...with storage inside the boxes for stuff. This opened up the back of the boat for fishing and the associated stuff. When I wanted another seat back there, I bungeed an ice chest with a cusion velcroed on its lid to the side/gunwhales using D-rings I put onto the gunwhales...this boat had a "tray" inside both gunwhales running from the windshile to stern on both sides. To each his own, but it was a very workable/fishable rig that way.

Re: Restoration of this boat

i have some pics i shot this weekend of before and after buffing...also have some shots of the floor. maybe it wil be a dead giveaway to someone if there should be a plywood floor or if carpet/flooring should be glued directly to that..

i would like to add that its been three years and im just now having the time to get to this boat...

i do have pics and will post as i upgrade things.
