Re: Respirators ?

Go to Home Depot and buy the good one, I think AOE is the brand but can't remember(round cartridges). I'm pretty sure you want the cartridges w/purple and yellow banding. I have 2 which I use somewhat reguarly at work and will say they are worth the money.

Re: Respirators ?

Do as above or spend the money on a box of good 3M disposables. They are not cheap (about $26 box), but you don't want any of those fibers in your lungs. The ones that I use have black foam all the way around the edge that meets your face.

Don't waste your money or risk protection by using a cheap mask.

Re: Respirators ?

I use a 3M 5100 series respirator. It's lightweight and easy to use while glassing. There are many filters to choose from. 3M has a toll free number for respirator info...1-800-243-4630.

For the disk, get a diamond blade. Used a lot for ceramic tile. They cut thru fiberglass very nicely. I think they are about $25 but by the time you wear out a slew of the thin carborundum cut off wheels you are money ahead.

Re: Respirators ?

For grinding use 36 grit discs, for cutting use the diamond wheel. I normally wear a dust mask, not a respirator when sanding or grinding.

most dust masks are crap at best, do yourself a huge favor and get a real respirator.

oldhull,

Don't forget eye protection as well, I made that mistake early on, now when I am grinding I look like "Darth Vader", hat, mask, leather gloves(saved my hand more than once) and saftey glasses.

It is more comfortable to grind with the gear on, for me at least, because I don't get that crap all over me.

One thing I don't do is use a paper suit which I have seen people use. I do blow all the dust off of me with a shop vac blower before I remove my gear.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Respirators ?

As Scrumbler said, many dust masks are junk, but there are good ones. The good ones are cheaper and more comfortable than rubber or silicone respirators. And like ED said, the more you cover up the better it will be.

Re: Respirators ?

I wear all the safety gear when grinding and tape up cuffs so nothing gets in. Safety googles that fit snug around your face keep dust out of eyes best...they vent but still keep a lot of stuff out. Standard safety glasses let a bunch of crap get into your eyes.
