Replacment of Oil Pan

Ok here we go...
So after a nice day of boating and skiing and run the bilge...and BOOM oil comes SPRAYING out of the bilge. I kill the engine and take a look. I cant see anything but oil and water in the bilge. Turns out the massive oil leak (2Qts in 1 Hr) is a crack in the oil pan, right at the base. Oil pan looks pretty rusty. And yes this is an older boat I recently purchased for a steal and a half. I have a 1990 Maxum 17ft I/O Merc 3.0 Alpha 1 Gen 1.
How hard would it be to replace the pan. I am not sure but I think I have enough clearance to drop the pan...if not and I need to get a lift, do we see this as a week long job or a day job. I really do not want to buy a new pan since they are rediculous in price. I am thinking get it off, sand it, weld it, paint it, snap back on.

Any thoughts?

You need a new pan or a good used one. When they get so rusty they crack, there isn't enough left to weld.
you also need to remove the drive, then the engine to replace the pan, the oil pump sticks down to the bottom of the pan, and you won't be able to get the pan out from under the engine.
You can also bet money the timing cover is in about the same shape.

^^^I agree completely. The good news is that everything Don mentions is very easy to do as long as you have the hoist to pull the engine. The drive comes off in 10 minutes if you take your time. As long as you don't have to remove much of the boat misc, (seats, etc), then the engine comes out easily as well. Plus with the engine out of the way, you can clean up the mess easier.

You also mention water AND oil. You need to find out where the water is coming from and fix that as well.

Are you sure thats all of your problem?-have you checked your compression?

If that pan failed from rust there is no way you are going to be able to weld it shut.
Did water freeze in the bilge and push that pan into the crank, then the crank wore through?

Make sure after all this removal and replace you have an alignment tool.
