Re: Replacing u-joint bellows on volvo 280 and have a few questions

Thanks again. I had found that same diagram after some google, but I never like to use such info unless it is vetted--which it is now ;-). I noticed that the clamps were not in these positions on the bellows I removed--perhaps a factor in its demise.

I also am considering changing the u-joints since I have the upper gear box off. Are these ujoints just standard issue? I can't think of a reason that they would need to be 'marinized' but, I don't know much. I also noticed that the u-joints on there now do not have zerk fittings--is that normal?

Thanks!

Re: Replacing u-joint bellows on volvo 280 and have a few questions

Think I might have found my answer on this here forum--I think. Looks like I can choose from the following:

SPICER# 5-1306X
ROCKFORD# K1306
DETROIT# 7260
NEAPCO# 1-6300 / 1-6301
PRECISION (MOOG)# 315G
TRW (FEDERAL MOGUL)# 20030 / 20030P

Is this info applicable to the aq280? I am not sure what models are similar to each other.

Thanks!

Local Napa had the PRECISION (MOOG)# 315G for $10 each. That's more like it. Looks like they have zerks as well. Any reason I should not use these?

You should be good there the same as the car ones. Volvo penta doesn't make there own ujoints same with the bearing you will have to replace and the seal. I was once in your position doing this to my engine. Seems like a daunting tast but it isn't too bad. Be sure on the new bellows for the marking they have to be installed a certain way (you will see writing with this side up or an arrow) Jd

Thanks! I am hoping the bearings are OK. They look fine(no discoloring/rust) and they rotate smoothly and do not exhibit any play. The outdrive never made any noise either.

When you pull the gearbox, bellows. Pull the drive shaft out I bet you will find icky stuff behind it, if it did get compromised. the bearing i'm referencing is the pds or primary drive shaft bearing that bearing.

It is cheap and good insurance to just replace it. While the seal on the drive shaft looked good and no slop on the drive shaft.

Here is why we don't let our bellows go bad

Behind the seal was even worse too bad I didn't get a picture of it. And like you I never noticed any odd noises.

Mine didn't look anything like that at all. That red thing looked normal. I had read on here that you had to pull the motor to change the PDS bearing--perhaps it's the flywheel bearing that does. If this isn't true, then maybe I should reconsider changing the bearing. Are you referring to #35? http://www.volvopentastore.com/mall/image/view/7/7/5263_1.png. I wonder if there is an automotive equivalent like there is for the u-joints.

Re: Replacing u-joint bellows on volvo 280 and have a few questions

the bearing you pull is #63

to get it out you pull the seal #67 the 2 snap rings 65 and 64. One of the snap rings you will need long needle nose pliers and slightly bend the tips. Depending on the kind you get you might have to round the tips smaller. Once the snap rings are off everything should slide out aft provided there's no corrosion. Mine I had to get huge vice grips and a slide hammer on the vice grips to knock it loose.

Do not pull seal #66 or you will be having to pull your engine.

When you buy bearing #63 they should be an open bearing not sealed. I cant remember if on the top of your flywheel cover if you have a zirk fiting on it to grease the pds bearing.

Do I need anything special to pull the front seal? Will pliers and a screw driver work? What about putting it all back in? I think its odd that the seal costs more than the bearing.....

Same as a wheel seal smack a hammer into it and pry it out.

For assembly what I did was grease the splines added the wheel bearing and the smaller o-ring and tapped it in with a rubber mallet. The splines will line up and slide in. When you pull the drive shaft you will see a tip on it that rides in a brass piece on the engine, put some grease on that during reassembly.
