Sandwiching 2 pieces of wood between the aluminum that has rivets and seams results in the wood not sitting flush and allows rocking motion. Would I be ok putting in some nylon spacers where the bolts go to create a small gap thereby creating a space between the wood and the aluminum? Only possible issues that I can think of is this may put more stress on the mounting holes in the aluminum or foregoing the spacers and tightening it down on the uneven surfaces would cause the wood to distort? Perhaps some type of material sandwiched in there that would conform to the contours and NOT absorb water? .. I hope this makes sense, Thanks...Joe.

Helps to know what you're working on.

No, no spacers.

I replaced the transom in my aluminum fishing boat and used marine grade ply and bolted it back on (its a 9.5 hp so not much power) ... Then a little paint for looks.

  1. Is the wood sandwiched between 2 pieces of aluminum?
  2. Is the wood being bolted to the inside of the boat with just the one piece of aluminum?
If the 2nd one then why not just drill some dibbits in the wood to allow the rivets and bolts to be counter sunk in?

A picture would be really helpful!
