What's involved in replacing the impeller on a 60 Merc bigfoot? Is there a standard kit I can buy? Never worked on boat engine before but fair to good on autos.

Thanks : :D

Re: replacing the impeller

Welcome to the forum,Don.
Working on boat engines is pretty much the same as auto-wrenchin. You allways will do better with the shop manual nearby. After I buy an outboard,I allways buy the manual next. You can't go wrong, and it usualy pays for itself after the first repair.
The impellers come impeller only, or in a pack with the pump face and an O-ring.
Write the engine's serial number down,as you'll need it to order the impeller.
Plan on the job taking 4 hours the first time, and an hour or so any tme thereafter.
This is because, (just like all other new tasks), you gotta read a little, wrench a little.
There is a prcedure to follow..
1. Drain the lower unit into a pan. The oil should of course be water-free.Run a finger thru the drained lube, and feel for chunks of metal, larger then a grain of sugar (smaller filings are normal). If you feel chunks, you have gear damage.
2.If there is water in the unit, you will want to install new seals while you have the L/U off.
3. shift into forward (engine off).
4.Tilt motor up all the way,and lock it using the tilt lock lever. Then, shift t neutral.

5. Scribe a mark on the gearcase and the trim tab for reference durring re-assembly.
6. remove the plastic cap from the gearcase housing (on the back).Sometimes, these are no longer there .Tey have a tendancy to fal out on thier own.

7. Remove the trim tab by unbolting it.
8.There should be a bolt under it .Unbolt it.
9. Remove the two locknuts forward of the trim tab hole, under the anti cavitation plate.
10. Remove the locknut on the front of the gearcase.

11. LOOSEN the two locknuts on the sides equally, and drop te L/U slightly.
12. Hold the L/U firmly ,while removing the two loosened nuts, and seperate the L/U from the engine.
13.sometimes they can be frozen, and take some working to seperate them from the leg.

14. Remove the upper reverse locking cam from the shift shaft.
Hope this helps you. But the shop manual will set you free.
Good luck.
