replacing shaft after impellor replacement

this is a chippy trying to fix an engine! I have replaced the impellor on 50hp merc outboard[late80s/early 90s],but when I slide the thing up into place to do it up- it stops before I can get the nuts onto the bolts!It was a bit tricky getting it off in the first place,can anyone advise ?

Rotate prop slowly to try to line th esplines up.<br />Look at the gear shift rod and make sure it is engaging properly (this can be a major PITA)<br />Do not put too much lubricant on the splines of the driveshaft; a tiny smear is enough.<br /><br />Keep checking the forum because someone else may have come across similar issues with this particular engine......<br /><br />and welcome to iboats!
