I am replacing the plywood seats on a 14' alumnium boat. I could not get any marine plywood so I am using AB exterior plywood. I am using Minwax spar urethane to protect the plywood. The manufacturer suggests three coats on bare wood. Is this enough? Is any more overkill? Will the AB plywood hold up to moisture?

Re: Replacing seats

exterior ply is fine for your application. I use poly resin or epoxy resin to coat. Usually 2 coats is enough. I guess you could do more. Just make sure it's sealed properly.
cheers

Re: Replacing seats

Thanks for the help. I have already started using the urethane, so it is too late for the epoxy. It wasn't that big a job so if this lasts a few years that would be fine. Nice job on your restoration.

Is it possible to apply poly resin over the urethane?

Re: Replacing seats

Invest in some seat covers , even if they are just garbage bags. The real damage is when hte seats are just sitting, and the foam gets wet and bad thihnkgs happen.

Probably most seats just have ext ply.
