Re: Replacing Seals
Well it's a little more trouble than replacing the impeller, but not much PROVIDED you have the right tools. You'll need iether a factory-made seal puller (about 10 buks)or make your own,if you have the facilities for that. You'll need a piece of pipe, the same diameter as the seals,to press the new ones in. You'll also need the shop manual, a gauge on an air hose, with a vent/fill screw hole fitting,to pressure test the lower unit (to make sure you got a good seal on everything). These are fairly easy to make, using a 0-30PSI air pressure gauge, and an air hose with threaded fitting, or a bicycle air pump with gauge and threaded fitting.
The hardest part of the whole job,is getting ALL of the old seals out, without getting anything in the gearcase, and the clean-up of the mounting surfaces.
Look at it this job from another perspective..A seal kit will cost 30buks or so, and the cost of the tools you don't currently own,the shop manual..You'll probably have 75buks in the thing max (including l/u juice)...Take it to a shop, it's down for a week or so, and you'll be out 250buks, if you take the l/u to them. Add 100 for them to work on the mounted unit.
If you fail (and it's not likely, if you take your time, go by the book, and get all questions answered here), you'll be out the cost of another seal kit,l/u lube you had to dump, and two screw gaskets.
Not a bad learning curve, really. And you'll have the pride in "making it go again"...Nothing like that feeling
