Replacing Oil Quick Drain hose

I noticed my quick drain hose looks funny, it kinda looks like alligator skin and sorta flaky. I can't tell if its rotted or if its just some other crude on it. I am leaning towards just replacing it but had a question about the quick disconnect fitting that its attached to on the oil pan.

Does anyone know if once I disconnect that hose if the fitting stops the flow of oil? Or do I need to wait until the next oil change?

Mine looked like that and I discovered that it was black paint from the factory. I doubt that the fitting will stop the oil. After all, when you remove the plug from the hose, the oil starts to drain.

Without pictures and assuming the worse, I would change it out. Spending $35-$40 dollars to change the oil (my cost for my 5.0) and replacing it before the season starts seems like a better idea IMO. This way you won't won't run into issues on the water, where they usually happen.

Thanks, it does kinda look like some paint or a coating of some kind. Its like that the entire length of the hose which I though was a strange way to rot. some quick disconnects have a check valve that stops the flow when the sections are separated, think about your air compressor disconnects. I guess I could just disconnect it and see what happens and hopefully reconnect it quickly if oil starts draining.

the oil will flow freely out of the pan once you disconnect it, no check valve there

is the hose or connection leaking??

That hose just goes to a fitting on the oil pan. Mine broke a while back.Merc here wanted over $100 for the hose. I told them where to go. Turned up a new fitting in a lathe. Short answer. If you unscrew the fitting, oil will flow out until the pan is empty. And my hose also had paint all over it, and looked rotten.

Thanks guys, its not leaking I just noticed it looked funny while I was in there replacing bellows and the shift cable this week.

As for unscrewing it as achris mentioned, mine has some type of quick disconnect. It seems I can push a release button and the hose will pop off the fitting so it should be a "quick" replacement but with no check valve I will need to drain all the brand new oil I put in back in october.

I went and took a closer look and some pictures and it does look like its some type of coating on that hose. Im not gonna worry about it but I will keep a close eye on it.

In fact it looks like gloss black paint. Just keep an eye on it.

Yep, it's 'Phantom Black', gloss black.... It's just 'over-spray' from when the engine was painted...

LOL!! I believe it. I wonder if there is an unpainted section, hose shaped, under the oil pan?
I'll have to look at mine this Spring.
