replacing lead plugs in 3cyl carbs necessary?

I need to rebuild the carbs on my 87 60hp. The manual says to remove the lead plugs (# 304201) for cleaning. I have never heard of this. What is your experience? Is it necessary to remove them?

No, that's not necessary. Some manuals just seem to go to the extreme.

I have only removed them once, on a submerged engine that had a lot of sand in it. As it turned out I really didn't need to.
I don't remove them for overhauls.
