I am replacing the impeller in my 1986 Johnson 40 hp VRO outboard model number J40ELCDE. I have removed the six bolts holding the lower unit on. How do I disconnect the shift rod which seems to be holding the unit on? When shifted in reverse it lowers the unit about one inch. Does the drive shaft simply slip off when lowering the unit? Are there any other precautions (i.e. seals, guides, gaskets, other mechanical devices) that I should know about? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You really should have a factory manual. The shift rod comes up thru the swivel housing, and connects under the carbs. There's a retainer clip that allows you to move the linkage and disconnect the rod. Also be careful not to change the shift rod height.Screwing it up or down does this.

Thanks for the help , particularly about not turning the shifter rod so as not to shange the linkage adjustment. Unit came off fine and impeller replaced. Motor running like new!!
