I have replaced the water plump on a 1983 90 hp mercury. While puting the foot back on I was unable to slide it all the way by hand. Should I use the nuts and bolts to pull the foot tight or will this damage any parts?

Chances are if you were able to lift it enough to catch the threads you have installed it properly, snug them up but stop if you feel too much resistance. a little grease everywhere helps pull it up too.

Using nuts and wrenches can easily damage the crankshaft or driveshaft. Turn the flywheel by hand until the crankshaft splines mate with the driveshaft splines. Install a couple of nuts finger tight. Now wiggle the gearcase up until it slides on. Finger tight all nuts until the gearcase is all the way on.

Re: Replacing foot

Got the foot back on. Everything seems to be ok except there is no pee comming out. This boat has been siting for about 4 years and I thinking the thermostat may be bad. This is a 1983 straight 6 , 90 hp. Does this have stats and if it does where are they located?

No thermostat on the inline 6. Check the tell tale for blockage, try running a piece of weed wacker line up it.

Re: Replacing foot

Remove the wrap cowl, and hook up the flusher. Pull the telltale hose off the nipple on the cylinder head water jacket cover. Start the hose and the motor and see if water comes out of the elbow. If no water in 30 sec, you have a waterpump problem.

Post back on results.
