Replacing bearings on a '63 10hp evinrude

I have 2 questions:
I need to replace a bearing on the crank shaft for a 1963 10hp Evinrude. How do I remove it? It doesn't want to come off very easily.

Also when I put the power head back together do I use sealant around the crankshaft area?

Do you have the power head split? If so the bearing should be easily removed. If not, I personally don't know how you can remove it. I know on mine there are a few "C" type clips to hold the bearing and seals in on the lower bearing. If it is the top bearing, I have no idea how to remove it without splitting the case. Other with more experience will chime in and explain that I'm sure.

You say it won't come off, so I have to assume you have the case split, right? If you do, the bearings should all simply slide off. If they won't, you have a seriously siezed bearing and the crankshaft is probably ruined also. The crankshaft serves as the inner race of the bearings.

Scotchlock 847 Sealant is the correct sealer for the crankcase halves. OMC/BRP part number 776964

I have the power head apart and the crankshaft completely out and both bearings are seized. The motor was seized up when it was given to me. I was told it had sat in his barn at least 10 years with being used. I suspect mositure got into it as the bearings have a rust color. I did remove the lower bearing seal and clip and kind of thought those bearings ought to turn on the shaft. The shaft, cylinders and pistons all look good. So no hope for this shaft then? Disappointing to hear cuz I was hoping to get it working.

Don't give up yet. See if you can press them off or use a gear type puller to remove them and then mic (measure) the shaft and see if some fine emory cloth could dress it up enough to use again. Just a thought...

if the crank is rust pitted even the TINIEST amount, you are wasting your time and money trying to use it. if the rest of the motor is in good shape, you could always pick up another crank from one of the salvage yards in the top secret file and be good to enjoy a rebuild for not much $$. ( you could even pick up a known good short block power head for not many $$) jmo

If the bearings are rusted on there so bad that they will not slide off, nor spin, toss the whole assembly. Its junk.

Not a rare motor, a good complete crank should not be hard to locate. Id place a wanted ad at aomci.org in the webvertize.

I have tried to polish the crank journals where the needle bearings rusted, but could never get it to work. Might work for a bit, but it will eventually self destruct.
