Replacing a Switch Assembly

Hi all,

I have a 54lb thrust motorguide transom mount trolling motor. As near as I can tell it's a 2005 thruster series (model# 960010056). A few weeks ago speed 3 started acting up, sometimes it wouldn't work. Now speed 3 and 4 are out completely and there is no difference between 1 and 2. Now as for reverse both work with no problem. From what I gather the speed control switch in the very top is the problem.

Now the hard part seems to be separating the speed control switch from the Handle. I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the control switch. There's no set screw, no pins..... I looks like it simply pops off, but since a handle costs more than the switch, I really don't want to break it.

Before you replace the switch, make sure the switch is the problem. While I'm not familiar with that particular motor, the switch often is just that -- it is a rotary device that merely selects which CIRCUIT controls the speed. In other words, it is the speed control board (if there is one) that is likely the problem. The switch merely selects which circuit on that board that in turn controls the motor. If the switch controlled the motor speed directly it would have to be very large to handle the high current the motor draws.

Yea, it looks like you are correct. I thought it was the switch due to the output voltages coming off the switch, it's been a long time but I used to work in electronics. It seemed as though a contact or two inside the switch weren't making the proper connection (I could go into more detail, but that would be pointless). I partly disassembled the motor head last night (after doing a bit more digging in the forums), and after putting everything back together, it now works. I really didn't do anything. I'm guessing something needed to be cleaned and I have no doubt the problem will come back.
