Re: Replaced impeller now stuck in forward
Hello I have a 1989 3.7 with a pre alpha outdrive. I put it in forward , dropped the lower leg , replaced the impeller put it back together and now it will not come out of forward ?? I disconnected the cables from the engine and they are fine but I cannot get the lower cable to move. It is stuck in forward. What did I do wrong. It worked before I took it off.
When you had the lower off you accidentally turned the lower shift shaft counterclockwise and shifted the gearcase into reverse or neutral. When you put it back together the intermediate shift shaft went on "off a spline", so even though it looks to be in forward, the gearcase is really in reverse, so when you go to shift (pull back on the control handle) the cable tries to rotate the shaft further counterclockwise and it will just not go. What you need to do is make sure the control is all the way forward, drop the lower enough to carefully rotate the lower ss all the way
clockwise and put it back together with the intermediate ss pointed straight ahead. Good luck
edit, sorry, had my clockwise and counterclockwise mixed up there:redface:
