Hello I have a 1989 3.7 with a pre alpha outdrive. I put it in forward , dropped the lower leg , replaced the impeller put it back together and now it will not come out of forward ?? I disconnected the cables from the engine and they are fine but I cannot get the lower cable to move. It is stuck in forward. What did I do wrong. It worked before I took it off.

sounds like the shift shaft moved while you were working on it. you need to take it apart and shift the lower unit into foreward and turn prop backwards till it "Locks" then put it back together. Check the forum for replacing water pump it may be worded better.

Whenever I can I leave the drive up at least 1/2 way, then when you put the lower the angle and gravity slides the dogs into forward (always checking with a quick ccw rotation on the prop, which is the way you want to turn it if you need to align the splines) so there is less hassle. Plus it's easier to see the water tube engage.

And the shift shafts in the upper and lower units have to mate up and fit together. You can look at the front of the drive above the lower unit and see if the two shift shafts have fit together.

If the cable is actually stuck - then you probably have the intermediate shift shaft in the wrong position.

It the unit is simply stuck in gear, and not the cable, then you might have forgotten the washer on top of the lower shift shaft.

When you had the lower off you accidentally turned the lower shift shaft counterclockwise and shifted the gearcase into reverse or neutral. When you put it back together the intermediate shift shaft went on "off a spline", so even though it looks to be in forward, the gearcase is really in reverse, so when you go to shift (pull back on the control handle) the cable tries to rotate the shaft further counterclockwise and it will just not go. What you need to do is make sure the control is all the way forward, drop the lower enough to carefully rotate the lower ss all the way clockwise and put it back together with the intermediate ss pointed straight ahead. Good luck
edit, sorry, had my clockwise and counterclockwise mixed up there:redface:
