Good day sirs.

In the old days when I worked on 50's & early 60's Evinrudes there was a small plate with two screws to remove on the mid / lower section in order to disengage the shift rod and drop the lower unit to replace the water pump. I am about to attempt to replace the water pump/impellor on the above mentioned motor but do no see a plate as I am familiar with. I do see a small hole that appears to be plugged with something. It is in about the same place as the old plate. Does this have to do with the shift rod? If not is the water pump and lower unit as simple as it was a long time ago? Hope this makes sense.

Your replies as always are so very appreciated .

Your engine is a 1973. To replace the the water pump, you have to remove the power head, This is not as bad as it sounds. Simply remove all of the bolts on the under side of the exhaust housing, remove the fuel line, and it lifts right off. Remove the lower crankshaft seals, and lay them aside. This will be a cork gasket, stainless washer, carbon seal with internal O-ring, spring, and spring retainer, take note of this. Then remove the two jam nuts from the shift rod. There is a roll pin through the top of the drive shaft that holds the upper seals in place, turn the drive shaft 90 degee's to the right of the power head. Remove the lower unit bolts, and it will drop right out. The hole in the side of the exhaust housing is the upper water tube grommet.

my 73 has a plate, I thought the only ones that required powerhead removal were the older 5.5's. even my 65 6 hp and my 69 6 hp have a plate covering the shift dissconnect. I have never seen a 6HP that required powerhead removal for a water pump. learn something new everyday I guess.

Rodbolt: Can we pass this off as Holiday madness, I'm way off the mark too. The manual shows to drop the gearcase to expose the shift link connector. I'm going to stop right here.

Lets keep this one going. Was lookong for something less than a power head removal for a water pump/ impellor replacement.

R.Johnson gave you the right answer in his second post. But it's a little short so here's what you do:
Start by shifting the engine into forward. You may have to rotate the prop a bit for it to engage. Then remove whatever bolts hold on the lower unit. They should be obvious and there should be four. The lower unit should drop a bit. Shift it into reverse and pull it down and it should drop some more. If it only goes 1/16" or so then the driveshaft is likely frozen to the crankshaft. Force it with wooden wedges.
Once you get the lower unit down about 1/2" you should be able to reach inside with a socket & extension, and completely remove one of the two bolts from the freshly revealed shift rod connector (a la the earier J/E engines) which will completely release the lower unit. Installation is the opposite of reverse. ;) Don't forget to replace the o-ring (if it's bad) and grease the splines at the top of the driveshaft.

R.Johnson, usually the posts don't seem to suffer until later on a Saturday night! :D

Re: Replace Water Pump Rude 6 HP 6303SJ

OK, the lower unit has been removed and the water pump revealed following instructions by Paul Moir. Easy.

Now an unpleasant surprise. On the top of the shaft should be a pin holding what in place. The pin is sheared off. There are no parts as shown in the parts diagram(springs, plates seals ect.).According to the parts diagram there should be several gaskets,O rings and seals here. My exhaust housing is fouled with black greasy oil or exhaust.

Is this oil and /or unburnt fuel leaking from the crank case? Odd that there is no spring ect.

Does this read as though like Mickey Mouse may have previously attempted a repair here.

Looking up the housing with a flashlight I can see what appears to be a brass colored seal or ring below where the drive shaft slips in.

And the fun continues.

I Pat,a diffrent rude owner have a 5 hp in the forms right after yours and I am just starting to work on mine. I am at the point with the shift bolt removed and will not come off short of hitting it with a sledge hammer. So---- I guess I need to pull the power head and remove the pin first. Pat

Re: Replace Water Pump Rude 6 HP 6303SJ

w2much
drive the old broken pin part out and install a new one. the seal parts ride on the pin. they are captive in the drive shaft housing. pay attention to the pin orientation when reassembling. about 80% of all the sixes I see have the pin sheared. most folks dont even know they sheared it. I shear them myself occasionally but I always order a pin when I order the pump kit.
I went and looked at my sixes and they have no plate, they dissaconnect just like the later 9.9s by dropping the lower a bit.
just remember its all fun :)
but I put pumps in all of them in the past 2 years and none had to have the powerhead removed, I scrapped a 5.5 a few years back over the powerhead bolts :)

get kit 391391 it is a newer updated h20 kit, bigger impeller, more flow.

if you just get a replacement impeller, itll either be small like teh old one, or youll end up woth a new, bigger impeller that wont fit in your housing. kit 391391 from any evinrude dealer. about 23 bucks

Re: Replace Water Pump Rude 6 HP 6303SJ

W2much, I ordered a new sheer pin ,a waterpump impeller and some lowerend seals for my 6 rude and will start puting it back togather this wed if the parts are in. My sheer pin was broken off on one side , so I had Action Marine order a new stainless 3/16 pin also. I pulled off the power head and realized you dont have to do that, you only need to rotate the prop in gear to alligh the pin to the 180 degree slots in the case.
Thanks to all the rude techs out in cyber world, I am well on my way now! Thank's! Pat, Austin TX.
