GYUS,
the transom in one of my boats (freebie) needs stringers replaced but the transom was replaced before i got the boat.I noticed that whomever put this transom in used chopper glass and then a nice gelcoat finish over that. My question is should i leave it alone or tear it out? The transom shows no cracks or wet places but im not for sure on chopper glass install. I have heard alot of bad about using that method..any advice?

Re: Replace transom??

if you mean chopped glass....or glass blown out of a chopper gun....it is more than likely fine...chances are ...that is how your hull was made.

to be sure .....take core samples of the transom itself and fill the holes with 5200.

please explain what you mean by chopper glass?

Re: Replace transom??

Do you think the trans was gelcoated from the factory ( any signs of a gelcoated transom ) ?

Just can not say for sure .. I dont like when repair guys start gellin parts of there repair that do not need it ( covering up some crap repair is the first thing that comes to mind when seeing this ).

I guess the above statement from oops is the best way to decide. Instead of using just a small drill bit I would use a 3/4" hole saw to just break through the glass and a few layers of the ply.

If the glass is not bonded to the wood then .. well then .. I dunno what to say at this point other then grinding off all of the gel.

Re: Replace transom??

Fiberglass mat can look like chopper gun stuff and it is common to cover the finished glass work with gel coat.

I have a Wellcraft with a redone transom and that is how it was done. I had them use coosa (a fiberglass product) instead of plywood for the core so that it will never rot..
