Re: Replace PDS bearings with flywheel cover installed?

I have done a couple searches here and when they get to the part about aligning they get vague,,,"make adjustments as needed" ,
I get the part about the 3 measuring spots

No alignment needed so ignore the last 2 posts.
Captmello did a good write up on this job and I have little new to add. As he said the snap rings are a PITA , beg ,borrow or steal
all the different snap ring pliers you can. Messy job, have lots of rags, paper towels , spray parts cleaner, degreaser, etc.
I had to slide my engines forward 10" to get the flywheel cover off and out of boat to rebuild, if you can remove the engine
easily that would make a pretty straight forward job out of it.

Thanks for the update. I'm jealous that you have finished and I still have to start. I've put off my project for a couple of weeks to get past the Memorial Day traffic and all the wakes since I'll have the stern hoisted but the bow still in the water. Thanks also for the tips about the snap rings. Did you have any difficulty knocking out the old bearing races and getting the new ones in? Congratulations on getting it done.

Re: Replace PDS bearings with flywheel cover installed?

The bearings were totally shot, rusty, no grease at all. When I got the F/C assembly out I just tapped the shaft out from the front to rear with a 4 lb no bounce hammer,,,inner races stayed on shaft, outer races stayed in housing and ball bearings came falling out!
All the races came out / off easy except front 1 on shaft , I used a 4" grinder and split it down the side then smacked it with a cold chisel to finish the split .
The new bearings tap on to the shaft easy and I used a propane torch to warm the housing a little, just warm to touch was enough, aluminum expands a lot. A 2" piece of black PVC pipe, about 18" long is perfect for seating the front bearing, that was my order of assembly, like Captmello said,, front bearing in housing first and snap ring, this one installs from the front,,then install rear bearing on shaft& small snap ring and slide it in from the rear, mine went in by hand, no tapping required, then rear snap ring that holds the bearing in,,,then pump it full of grease,
until you have grease coming out of both bearings then install the last snap ring in the rear, this one the seal butts up on. Then install both seals,,,the back one goes in "backwards" . So YES the new bearings go in easy .

So there is 3 big snap rings, 1 in front, 2 in rear,,and 1 small snap ring on rear of shaft,,,,,,4 total.
A pair of long reach needle nose with the tips ground down to fit snap rings is very handy.

Also I had a very hard time finding a zerk fitting of the correct threads, I think it is 10mm x 1.5 threads per inch , way more coarse threads than pipe threads,,,,if you have zerks in already you have it made,,if not t might be a good idea to start looking soon. But I am in a small town in Alaska,,,,maybe in the real world they are easy to find (?) I can tell by what you have posted here that you are
plenty good of a mechanic to do this job, you will handle it easily . Give me a heads up a day or 2 before you start and I will
keep an eye out here in case you run into problems. Any questions just ask, I will try and not write a book again ;)

Books are good. Thanks again for sharing your experience and the offer to help with advice if I get stuck. What type of grease did you decide on for the bearings? VP doesn't publish any spec, other than water resistant. A friend suggested using Mobile 1 synthetic grease.

I used Chevron Black Pearl grease , it seemed like the best of what is available in this small town. I think Mobil 1 would work good.

I can now say that it is possible but very, very difficult to change the spider in the fork next to the bearing box without removing the shaft. It took me several days to change the spiders on my 2 drives and I broke a lot of tools in the process. The tight clearances make using normal tooling impossible. I had to make special spacers from old sockets, nuts and other hardware, and then use an antique 4" C clamp and a gear puller...with lots of heat and AeroKroil, while protecting the shaft seal from the heat.

The GKN TVC100010G spiders fit perfectly.

start by installing the front bearing into the F/C followed by the front snap ring. Next install the rear bearing onto the PDS. I think I actually supported the bearing on something and drove the PDS into the bearing. And install the small snap ring. Now install the PDS in from the back of the boat. Again, you'll need something that will put the pressure on the outside race of the bearing to avoid damage. then install the larger snap ring that sits against the rear bearing, and the snap ring that holds the aft seal. Once you get to this point, I would pump grease in through the zerk on top of the F/C until is start oozing through the bearings.
THANK YOU KINDLY
