Just got the bad news from my mechanic that he found metal shavings in the oil filter. The motor itself runs good at the moment, but there is a ticking noise at high RPM's. The mechanic told me that at this point there is nothing that could be done to salvage the motor, and quoted me 5k to fix or replace it. I'm looking to buy a crate motor and attempt the repair myself, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it.
I would love some suggestions on how to ensure that I pick the correct crate motor, get a good price for it and also maybe some instructions on how to go about making the swap once i get the replacement.
Engine serial number is 0M002341
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Can go to your local GM dealer and ask for a new marine crate motor. Here is one from Michigan Motorz for 3K new crate and reman for 2.4K

New crate

Reman

There are plenty out there from different vendors.

It won't be that hard to do what you want to do, just needs some tools and a way to remove and install the motor. Removing the motor could be as quick as a hour or may take all day. It all depends on how flexible you are, kinds of tools and access to hoses and bolts.

You could rebuild your own, with help from a local machine shop

No that's not good, its non-vortec motor and if you click on the "application" tab at summit you will see if is for 1987 to 1995. You need 1996 and up

Check and see if your current engine has the crank sensor on the lower left of the front timing cover. Would assume EFI uses this. My carb engine has the sensor but it is unused, if used on yours you need one with the sensor. Might be worth a call to summit

Take your current running motor to your local engine machine shop, you will be surprised at how little it costs to do a stock rebuild

My 5.7l EFI has the knock sensor in a Y fitting mounted in the starboard drain hole so that may not be an issue.
