Replace a tachometer

I have a Faria tach on my Center Console using a 200HP Yamaha 2 stroke. The tach has not worked for some time, stops when it hits 3000RPM. I found a Faria Tach 7000 W on the internet for $75. The one I have now is older (don't have the model) but appears to be about the same. Is as simple as removing the old tach and hooking the new one up using the same connections?

Almost. There's probably a setting on the tach for "poles", that will have to match your existing one.

Is your engine charging the battery ok? Reason I'm asking is because a large number of "tach problems" are really bad rectifiers in the outboard engine.

Charging fine. I just put the Yamaha on replacing a Suzuki 225. Tach behaved the same before as it does now. Thanx for the reply!

Does the tach have an engine size setting on the back? If so, might be set to the wrong one?

I don't know, but it worked fine for several years with the Suzuki 225 before it stopped, so I don't think that is the issue.

Regardless you must set it to the correct setting or it will not work properly.

Ayuh,... Sometimes you can get another lap or 2 outa an old tach by twistin' that little selector switch a few times each way, Then settin' it where it belongs...

As for buying another tach,...
Ya gotta figure out how the motor speaks to it...
They ain't all the same...
Some outboards are different than others,...
Most outboards are different than I/Os or inboards,...
And,...
Most outboards are completely different than an automobile...

It wouldn't hurt to call Faria and see what it would take to fix it. I had a Teleflex that was at least 5 years old and it started sticking. They fixed it for free.
